Reviews/Ratings for Charlie and the Chocolate Factory?

And if you want to Rate it...

I enjoyed it, but I think I liked the old Gene Wilder one better. The remake's songs are kind of jarring, and Johnny Depp as Wonka doesn't feel like he's in control of the situation at all. The whole mess with the father was just...weird, even though Christopher Lee is good.

IMO and all that. I enjoyed it a great deal :)

I guess I'm in the minority. I didn't like the newer version as much as the classic. I felt that Depp's portrayel of Wonka made him very hard to like. Rather, I felt he was too odd. I thought the Oompa Loompa's were great, but I miss the original song.

How did it compare to Gene Wilder?
did the Backstory add depth or distract?
Is Burton a genius or a moneygrubbing hack or both?

Different. Both excellent actors in a nice wierd role that fit them.

I thought it was an excellent addition.

moneygrubbing genius. Neither of those offend me, he does great work.

I read that the scriptwriter for Charlie didn't see the Wilder version until he was done with his script. He was stunned at how much darker it was than his version.

I thought they did a great job of casting; even the grandparents were cool in their own way.
That's not easy! Deep Roy was excellent, he did a superb job on all the roles he had. From www.imdb.com

There are 165 Oompa-Loompas in Burton's 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' and he plays everyone of them. For this role, he had to take Pilates and dance lessons in preparations for the four musical numbers.
