Revised Books: 320 Pages, $50 US? Um, Maybe $30...

In truth, "3E" isn't the official title. The game is called "Dungeons and Dragons" in the books, with no mention of "3rd edition" or "3E" anywhere.

Good point.

I wonder what they'll call it when WotC finally gets around to doing a completely new edition. Will they (I mean WotC in official terms) call it fourth edition, second edition, or something else?

I'm not encouraging piracy here, but reprinting books that have 75% content from the original and some unknown percentage of material found in the splat books (that a lot of people already own) is the kind of thing that tempts otherwise lawful folks to download copies of these puppies for free.

Hmm, ninety percent content I already have, same price as I paid for the original 3E book... looks like a 10x price increase to me.

No, it's a price decrease. They are selling more material for the same price. The fact that you already have the material is irrelevant, since you don't have to buy a copy.

new prices

Would it not be safe to say that if the non-core books are $40, that the new core books would also be $40. It also follows the trend used by Wizards of price increases each year.

For those of us who never bothered with the splat books in the first place, this looks like a very good thing. I am getting a heck of a lot out of this reprinting! I am also passing along my DMG and MM to another DM (who doesn't even own them!). I am keeping the old PHB for my wife to use for now, I think, but will probably get a new one for her eventually.

Overall, I am very happy and excited about the new printing. Of course, having not spent any money on D&D books since the three core, it doesn't sound like a lot of money to me.

Price of the books

rijeagle: The "price increases" are for books that will sell to only a limited number of the 3E community. If there are 1 million 3E players, and only 250K are interested/want the Epic Level Handbook, then they have to price the book higher to make an expected profit on the book.

But, with the core rule books (and possibily the revised core books), the books will appeal to the broad 3E audience, more so than any FR supplements, Savage Species...etc, and they can charge less because they will sell more.

It also helps that the vast majority of the content for the revised core rule books is repint material...and not brand new, which also reduces the cost to produce the product.

Yeah, I'll be getting them to replace older books, and for no other reason.

My original PHB is almost coverless, so I'll probably be getting a new one of those.

The rest will follow only when my books become so used and abused that I need them.

...right now the only other book that is anywhere near as abused as my PHB is Monsters of Faerun, which, sadly, isn't reprinted or anything anymore...

....maybe they'll include it in the new MM? (hell, they're nearly doubling the size of it, they've got the space..:)) Otherwise, I guess there will be a collection of beasties that will officially be in a rare category for 3e...since MoF isn't in circulation anymore...

MAybe they will reprint MAgic of Faurun and Monsters of Faurun together in HARDBACK. Heck, I'd like to get the Silver Marches in HARDBACK as well. Everything WOTC is producing this year has a hardback cover.....

Oh well....

In response to multiple questions about my last post. For the same reason that many people here will be paying (again) for the content in an integrated format, it's tempting to get the content (90% of which I paid for already) in an integrated format myself.

I am not saying I plan to steal anything. I am not encouraging stealing anything. I am merely commenting that re-releasing a compilation of things that they have essentially already released between the SRD, splat books, errata, and previous editions is going to cause some people (not me, mind you) to be more likely not to pay for the same content again. Am I wrong?

If I am wrong, how many more revisions are you willing to pay for, given an apparently very low percentage of new content? If they include each year's errata and splat books in the core books and release a new set every year, are you all going to buy them? How about every six months? There comes a time when you grow tired of paying for what's essentially a compilation of the same material you already paid for.

I, too, plan to use the SRD in conjunction with my "old" books, but I would be extremely surprised if the new books don't appear on file-sharing within days of release...

BTW, if there is more new content in them, I'm more likely to buy them. I am admittedly deriving the 90% statistic I use above from hearsay, and will stand corrected if there is more to the books than has been rumored.

I have a question about the D20 System SRD that you are all expecting to 'fill in the gaps' for 3.x?

If 4 classes are being significantly changed (Bard, Ranger, Monk & Druid) and class descriptions are NOT part of the SRD (are they?), how will the SRD fill in the gaps? Same thing with spell changes and clarifications....right?

Just curious.
