Appearance
Relsyn Saffire is a thick man with broad shoulders and very curly brown hair. He usually has a scruffy growth of light beard, as he has tried – unsuccessfully – for several years to grow a worthy one. He has deep-set brown eyes accented by unusually large dark bags under his eyes. A small gold ring hangs from his left earlobe.

Background
Relsyn Saffire is the seventh and last son of Redwyn Sapphire. He grew up in a privileged environment provided by his father, a banker/jeweler of considerable note in Antioch. His mother worked as a potion brewer and claimed that her mother, Relsyn’s grandmother, whom Relsyn never met, could work many magics. His father was of enough wealth and connection to be granted minor nobility, and adopted the name Sapphire. Although it is not uncommon for many younger sons of prosperous families to enter the priesthood, Relsyn’s method of arriving at this point was not typical.

At age 10, Relsyn, as well as his brother Belden, the two youngest boys, were opted to the church by their father. Relsyn pledged to the service of St Salix, Belden to the service of St Xantas. Several days after this unsettling news, Relsyn was doing bookwork in the bank, when he several strange entries, which through some investigation entries that included bribes from churchmen to his father and back for various favors supporting illegal or immoral enterprises such as a brothel on the outskirts of Antioch. Implicated in these was the Priest in change of the Abbey of St Salix to which Relsyn had been vowed and Relsyn has never been able to shake the feeling that he and his brother were pledged to the church as part of a business deal.

Discovering this evidence, he confronted his Father and was soundly beaten and told no one would believe him. Relsyn, fearing to go into church service, hid, but was turned in by his gloating oldest brother Revin.

His first year of training in the service of Salix was drudgery, and Relsyn an indifferent student. Relsyn often thought that the old Abbot was keeping an extra eye on him, but he was not mistreated or singled out in any way. During this year he was befriended by an elderly librarian, Garret, in the service of St. Macedone, to whom he finally entrusted his secret and his distrust of the Abbot. Garret offered to have his reassigned to the order of St. Macedone.

The order of St Macedone was a perfect fit for Relsyn. The priests of St. Macedone worship Eli above all, but knowledge a close second. Relsyn’s love of books was developed during the his twelve years as an acolyte, earning the Silver Tome Decoration for distinction as a student librarian in the Great Library. He also befriended a small group of sorcerers in St. Macedone’s service, a group that called themselves the Sanguine Silver Sentinels of the Saint’s Sacred Tomes. This group helped him to develop his sorcerous abilities as well a mischievous streak. One of his proudest achievements during these years was the time he spent helping to build with the sweat of his brow, St. Macedone’s Library in Arras.

Relsyn remains unforgiving of his Father and his brother Revin. This troubles him because he know that he is called to forgive, but cannot do so. He has changed the spelling of his last name to disassociate himself with the family. The name of his familiar, Jewel, is an inside joke between himself and several friends. Relsyn remains in amiable contact with his Mother and several brothers, though he has lost track of Belden, who travels much.

Relsyn has an extreme fear of spiders: he was bitten by one, rather severely, as a child.

Background:

Elbereth was born on the coldest day of winter under a full moon ringed with frost. As the firstborn girl in her family, she received a necklace: a simple, sturdy hemp band with a dark metal sheath which held what appeared to be an ordinary stone with a rude carving of a lizard. It had been passed down through forgotten generations, always to the oldest daughter. It was accompanied by an old family legend of the first owner, Ilmare. The story told that she had been a powerful sorceress who often wandered the forests and made many friends among all sorts of living things. Some even told of how she would speak with trees, streams, even stones. She did much in her time in defence of the tribe in the struggles against goblins, marauding barbarians, snake men, and other enemies, and she was often rewarded with various medals and tokens from the rulers of the tribe. Yet the origin of the stone in this necklace was very different.
A young boy in the village, Neithan, was out with his dog, exploring the surrounding forest on a sunny day of winter. They walked along the river about a mile; then suddenly the dog took off after a rabbit. Though the boy called to it, it continued to run. The chase traveled across the frozen river, and the boy followed. But the sun had been a little too warm that day and the boy’s footfalls a little too heavy. The unstable river ice cracked, and he fell in to the cold water. The dog heard the crack and following splash, abandoned his chase to return to his boy, and started howling. Ilmare, on a meditation walk in the forest, heard the dog and understood the call for help. She went as quickly as she could, coming across the boy desperately grasping at the broken edges of the hole. She reached toward him with her staff, which he was able to hold on to long enough to be pulled out of the water. He was shivering uncontrollably so she gave him her cloak and started a magical fire. After he had dried and warmed up, they walked together back to the village, not telling anyone of the rescue. “I am tired of being a hero,” the sorceress told him. “Please don’t spread this story.”
About a week later, Neithan showed up at her door. In thanks to her, he gave her a stone in which he had carved his favourite animal. “To remember me by,” he said. “Thank you.” As she received it, she called it to light with a fire of its own. This small stone became a greater treasure to her than all the other medals and tokens of honour. For only she and the boy knew the reason for this gift. This represented a quiet honour, a quiet gratitude, and was something she could carry without receiving the awe of everyone she passed. She later crafted the band and sheath for this treasure of hers; and she passed it on to her only daughter, along with its story. But without her, the appearance of flame within the stone disappeared. Once again it was merely an ordinary carven stone. Yet, found later in her writings was a promise that one day it would again light. Its fire would return when it was given to the one destined to follow in her spirit and power.
Too many years had now passed for this to be any more than a bedtime story, always kept close within the family, though rumours at times escaped. The necklace had become no more than an heirloom still passed on only for the sake of family tradition. It was still worn by the eldest daughter in the family, beginning on her fiftieth birthday, mostly because that was simply what was done. As Elbereth grew with the necklace awaiting her, she heard the story many times, just as her mother and grandmother before her. She loved spending time out in the forest, and she developed many friendships among the animals. She could even hear changes in the wind or the movement of leaves, almost hearing whispers. Still, the stories were no more than just that. But on that special birthday, she began to believe. As she ceremoniously tied the band around her neck, something within the stone appeared to move. She looked more closely and thought she saw a flame, but the stone did not warm. Gradually the flame spread until the inside of the small stone seemed filled with whirling fire, highlighting the comparatively dark lizard carving.
From that day on, she and her family knew she was born to greatness. She was soon apprenticed to Cilomir, a great sorcerer in the tribe, so that she could develop and learn to use and control her power. The truth of the old story spread, she began exercising her power for the tribe, helping provide food, working for protection, and soon Elbereth received some of the awe Ilmare had had as she walked among the houses. But instead of backing quietly away, she enjoyed every admiring glance.
Still, her sorcerer mentor was not impressed. He continued on his slow pace of teaching even when Elbereth quickly mastered all he taught. She was frustrated with his withholding of more advanced knowledge, and she began borrowing some of his books without his permission to learn more on her own. This way she picked up much knowledge, though her control of the power was at times nearly inadequate. But she pressed on. She reached a point at which, more than anything else her mentor could teach, she wanted to learn to obtain a familiar. However, Cilomir refused, saying she was not yet ready. In this Elbereth heard his jealousy and knew she needed to get away from his grasp to progress further, and to achieve the greatness she had always known would one day be hers. He would only continue to hold her back. So she began to look for a chance to run.
