I was trying to remember who Richard Garfield was.
At first I thought maybe the original poster was meaning Richard Gariott aka Lord British, the Ultima guy.
So I did a google search and found out he was the inventer of M:tG. So there we go. But he's not the guy who runs GenCon now, the former WotC head is he?
Anyway, GG is very open and friendly on the boards, but he also wrote all the TSR books. So Dave Arneson may have invented it (or at least Chainmail Fantasy Rules), and Rob Kurnst may have written lots of the good adventures, but Gary wrote the rule books that most of us learned to play with. I've read little by any of the other originals, but I've read lots by Gary.
To me, regardless of whether I like the style of writing of the old DMG, enjoy the same fiction or agree with his opinions on the OGL or anythig else, Gary Gygax will always be the face of DnD to me. And that counts for a lot.
