Riding around

Hey folks,
I'm likely to be playing a halfling dog rider this weekend. I had a few questions.

First of all, say the dog I'm riding moves in a way that could provoke an AoO. Does the baddy get to swing at either of us? Both of us if he has combat reflexes?

If the dog charges, what impact does that have on the riders AC, etc.? Is it as if the rider is also charging?

The dog-back thing seems fairly huge at lower levels. And at higher levels too (awakened dogs or somesuch as a cohort or paladin's mount)

As a silly side note, can a halfing on a dog fire a medium short bow? I know you can't use a small long bow but can you take the penalty for doing this (-2 I think) rather than just not being allowed to shoot said bow?

Thanks!

Riding..

Take some time and read up on the Ride skill in the SRD or PHB...

Essentially, you and your mount are one in regards to movement, so drawn AoO can go against either of you, penalties to AC from charging go to each of you, etc..

You can get a bow designed for firing from dog-back..its called a composite Long bow. I think using a larger size bow would be a bad thing.

Mounted combat can be a huge advantage throughout the campaign, the main problems are A> DM's don't know/use the Ride rules and B> most combats occur inside, where riding is not really that helpful.

Good luck with the War-Dog, it should be fun!
