Riding Dog skill points

jaults

First Post
Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong here?
  • A riding dog is 2 HD
  • A riding dog has the following stats: Str 15, Dex 15, Con 15, Int 2, Wis 12, Cha 6
  • It has the following skills: Jump +8, Listen +5, Spot +5, Swim +3, Survival +1
  • It has the Alertness feat and a +4 racial bonus on Jump checks
  • Animals get 2 + Int mod per HD skill points, with a minimum of 1 per HD.
Doesn't that mean a normal riding dog should get 1 skill point per HD? It looks to me like it has 5 skill points:
  • Jump +8 = 4 racial bonus + 3 Str + 1 rank
  • Listen +5 = 2 Alertness + 1 Wis + 2 ranks
  • Spot +5 = 2 Alertness + 1 Wis + 2 ranks
  • Swim +3 = 3 Str + 0 ranks
  • Survival +1 = 1 Wis + 0 rank
Can someone clear up my confusion?

Thanks,
Jason

Off course, it is still wrong, in that spot and listen are cross-class skills for a riding dog, so both should be one rank lower.

EDIT: I could be wrong in that all the animals then would have to be changed. Any thoughts? Anyone?

You are wrong. :)

From the SRD, MONSTERS

Skills
This line gives the creature’s skills, along with each skill’s modifier (including adjustments for ability scores, armor check penalties, and any bonuses from feats or racial traits). All listed skills are class skills...

Listen? Cross-class for a *dog*? I would think that a dog would have a very hefty bonus to listen.

Thanks mate. I wonder why I never noticed that before, maybe because I never really bothered to check the actually skill points of monsters before I guess.

Anyway, take a look at the hobgoblin then and tell me how that adds up then.

Nope, it doesn't actually. It only has the bonus from alertness and wisdom.
