Riding Dogs

Note also that a Riding Dog animal companions benefits from a nice increase in strength which increases the carrying capacity. Also note that Light Armor Barding, I believe, only weighs as much as armor for a medium humanoid, so it should be easy to be barded and carry a small rider.

Animals dont need to be proficient in armor (horses dont, llamas dont, camels dont,etc...) no where does it say that an animal needs to have proficency to use armor. All this will acomplish is to clutter your game with sensless rules. If you have to come up with a reasoning, then say any animal that is trained as a combat mount is able to use armor with no penalties, any animal that is not cannot. K.I.S.S

on a lighter note the germans used to train dogs to run under tanks, then they would strap explosives to the dog and have him run under a tank, messy but effective.

Have you seen the Rome: Total War video of war dogs against elephants? They go charging at the elephants in a massive herd, and then the elephants just start rearing up, and stoming, and throwing dog corpses all over the place, raining carcasses down. It's great.

Of course, to take out the elephants, you need flaming pigs. But nobody cares about putting armor on a flaming pig.
