Rifts -- Who's played it?

I can guess, but for your sanity, Psion, I'll leave it alone.

PS: It starts with an "F," right? ;)

Probably. Either that one, or the incredibly racist one I'd wager. Time to google that phrase.

I was right! Victory for Sylvanas!

I love the setting. Put it on a diet and trim some of the fat off and it would be great. If I ever played again I'd probably do a D20 Modern/Future conversion of it. I recommend the rule book, any version of it. Played straight up from that it's not TOO out of whack. OK, maybe it is, but still. Mine it for a plentidude of ideas, and make it your own. I don't think you'll be disappointed. I loved the Atlantis and Australia world books. Lone Star was pretty neat too.

I actually always wanted to do a Post World Of Darkness Rifts. The Sabbat are still in Mexico, Werewolves are roaming Central and Western North America, the Coalition is the bastard child of the Technocracy...wow, know that I write that down it seems pretty bad.

Sigh...

I can see some will dig. And like Bruce Cordell's take on the far realms, mere knowledge of the thing helps advance it's creeping advance into the universe.

I don't want grandma to accidentally follow the link, but try googling, exactly:
"worst role-playing game ever made"

quotes included.

It's not on the top of the page, but there should be a review of it and you will know it.
Ugh, reading that review hurts.

The text colors don't help.

I wonder if it was done to inflict pain on anyone willing to even read it to get back at them for having to review the game?

Thief!!! That was my idea. No, seriously I had thought of that as well, but then demographics becomes a huge difficulty. Werespiders, weregators, wereroaches....

Regarding those talking about "That game" I believe that Sean Connery said it best...

"Indiana... let it go."

There are better things to talk about and focusing on "that game" never ends well.

First, the obligatory "Sembieda has some great ideas, but for the most part his game design is utterly crackheaded."

On the original topic, I too was a little excited when I first saw the new RIFTS core book coming up. Then I read the blurb quoted earlier in this thread. I noticed that they'd managed to include a whole bunch more of the stuff people complain about, while touting the fact that they hadn't fixed anything that needed it as a feature. Good job, Kev. I have no idea how you keep the company afloat while so thoroughly ignoring input from every possible source - it's really quite impressive.

Agreed. I played a Cyber-Knight once and the idea was cool but the rules were simply whacky. I think when Mutants and Masterminds 2nd ed comes out you will be able to do "the Rifts things", but with decent rules. I mean, how hard is it to mix cyborgs, giant robot suits, lasers, magic and psionics? That's just a supers game, isn't it?

I ran and played in RIFTS campaigns throughout my college days. The setting is alright. Some books like the Vampire Empires (although I hate the idea of Vampire Intelligences), South America, and Atlantis have awesome ideas; you can also get into some really craptastic books like Mechanoids, Africa, and Triax and the NGR. The system is about as inconsistent as you can find. Mechanics and power levels are all over the place, so much so that's it's impossible to look at the setting and believe for a second that humans would have survived at all. Rifts done in D20 or M&M would be great, but otherwise look elsewhere.

As for the poster that thinks D20 ripped off Rifts...Please, seek help. You have obviously lost all touch with reality.

I've run it, and it works. I made some pretty big changes to both the future world of rifts and the WoD games though. It was more 'based on both, but ultimately my own creation'. It ran decent enough and we managed to come away with a few anecdotes and a couple of memorable characters.

I'm jealous. Whenever I brought the idea up to my group they looked at me funny. I was never sure if it would work well. Also, the thought of trying to adapt Ascension rules to the new reality was very daunting. I'd imagine you had to make a lot of changes to the "core" Rifts setting. There's simply waaaaaay to much going on to make it cohesive.
