Ring of Blades (Complete Arcane) spell?

Isnt it a bit stronger than FireShield ? Fire shield does give "improved evasion", but you must be hit to do the damage. This spell covers 8 squares and lasts 1min/lvl, while Fireshield is 1rnd/lvl.
Seems a bit strong for a cleric spell and a bit low for Warmage.

Fireshield is better for opponents that have multiple attack routines. The more attacks, the more they get nailed. It's not good for creatures that have one or two big attacks. I think the balancing factor is the "I can't make it stop!" factor of the Ring, which makes it much harder to get emergency healing, for example. Also, Spring Attack and reach foil the Ring of Blades to a certain extent, so long as the attacker stays out of reach of the ring on the end of the target's turn.

You could always wait till the "end of the round" to get close to your spring attacker... :] You most certainly have your double move left.

It's actually a 3rd level spell for both cleric and warmage (not 2nd). A good spell for melee clerics, but more of a keep-away spell for a warmage. He might be able to use light (and medium at 8th level) armor and light shields, but going toe-to-toe with a melee bruiser still isn't a good idea.

I believe it's automatic. And I think the material of the blades actually depends on your lawful/chaotic component. Either cold iron or silver, for your demon- or devil-dicing pleasure. The "cleric" in my game (actually a homebrew class but it uses the cleric list) just got this spell and is really looking forward to using it since he's not much good in melee.
What difference does it's being iron or silver make?

glass.

Damage Reduction?

It doesn't matter for DR. Spell damages always bypass DR.

But it does matter for Regeneration i guess. For example, Chain Devil cannot convert damages from silver weapon. By RAW some may argue that those blades are just spells and not weapons, though.

As dagger pointed out in post #5, at the end of the caster's turn.

Yes. So someone with Spring Attack feat can move in, attack the caster, then move out to a safe space.

Also, someone with reach can attack the caster without any trouble.
