Ring of Blinking question

7 rounds, for the baseline version.

The description says that it works "as the Blink spell", which has a duration of 1 rd/lvl. As listed in the SRD, the ring is at 7th caster level.

If you create the ring yourself, the effect might last longer; I don't recall how caster level is assigned for rings.

You know, when I first glance at the title of this thread I thought it said Ring of Bikini :D .

Sounds like something Airwolf would have ;) .

Does anybody happen to recall which designer stated that as a general rule, continuous effects (using spells that normally have a duration shorter than 1 minute per level) are doubled? I thought it was Andy Collins, but I'm not 100% sure about that. Was it Sean?

I'd be interested to hear this. Until otherwise, I'll just go with my ring lasting for 7 rounds. 7 rounds of combat is a long time, but I don't always activate it imediatly at the begining of combat, which the length will become important.

I should clarify my statement. When I said "doubled", I meant doubled in cost, not duration. I just visited Andy's site, but I couldnt' find anything that addresses this, so it must have been someone else. I'm thinking it was Sean's boards.

Unlimited uses is the standard cost. If the item has limeted uses per day, then the base cost for the spell effect gets divided (by 5 divided by uses per day I think).

Actually, it's not in all cases. Note that the Ring of Blinking is command word activated, but it's not priced that way. If it were priced as command word, it would cost 27,000gp (3 x 5 x 1,800gp). Instead, it's priced as a use-activated item (3 x 5 x 2,000gp = 30,000gp).

Also, if the caster level of the item affected the duration of the blinking, it would be more expensive:
1) 37,800gp for command word activation (3 x 7 x 1,800gp)
2) 42,000gp for use-activated (3 x 7 x 2,000gp)

As the ring exists in the DMG, it isn't priced based upon the caster level of the item, nor is it priced based upon a command word activated item. IMO, the jury is most definately still out on how long it lasts.

Keep in mind, however, that Monte Cook suggests (on his site) that the caster level of the item is what determines the duration of the effects of the item. But that's not the case here. So, either the price is incorrect, the caster level of the item is incorrect, or the caster level of the item itself has absolutely nothing to do with the duration of the effect. Wierd, no? :)

Well, my DM still thinks it lasts forever. So, what my DM doesn't know won't kill my charecter :D

But most combat haven't lasted all that long, so its not that big of a deal. "Ok, my blinking ends, I reuse it." and get another 7 rounds. But until my DM cares... ;)
