Ring of nine lives qn

Strict intepretation (this is the Rules forum after all): Since you have dropped below 10 hps, the item will take effect, and cast a heal spell on you, using up a charge. However, since you are dead, said spell has no effect.
Even stricter interpretation:): Since you have dropped below 10 hps, you are no longer a creature and the ring will not activate. A magic item like this won't work on objects.

My IR aftermath char is currently wearing 2 of these rings  But that thing is kinda hard to kill but it's supposed to be hard to kill :D

It's in the rogue gal under IR aftermath Finished characters.

My contention is that they were hit by something that dropped them to -10 outright and their charge was expended, dropping it to 8, but still leaving them dead, right where you found the ring. THERE...does that settle EVERY argument?
hmmmph!

Nope. You're forgetting Poison, Save or Die, Energy drain, people selling the ring after their adventuring days are over, Green Slime (Although it would likely eat the ring too), Drowning, Suffication, and Ability damage. None of these require HP loss.

Nyah. :)

the first of which being to negate any argument about value, because if you find it, it's free.

That doesn't negate anything at all. If you find it, it still counts against your character wealth. The value of the ring doesn't change, whether you find it or buy it. Either way, you get a dent in your pocket.

I think it would not heal you if you drop below -10. The healing takes place after you take the damage. You don't know how many hp you have left until the damage is rolled and therefore taken. If it drops you below 0 to -9, you get healed. If you drop to -10 you are dead.

You can't compare it to a ring ot true ressurection because you would lose a level everytime you died, and it would not heal you unless you went down to -10. The ring of nine live only works if you drop below 0, but above -9.

It is an expensive item because you don't really have to worry about anything. It will be used up if the criteria is met. It is just like a cleric readying an action to cast heal on a character after he takes another hit. If the character drops below -10, the heal is wasted, but if he is at -9, he gets healed to max hp.

I think it is a great item. It is just used as a safeguard to protect your butt when you don't know what coming and can't prepare.

Then it shouldn't cost 8,750gp per charge. 2,640gp will get you an item that does what you want.

Of course you can, and by the charge, a ring of true ressurection is still cheaper than a ring of nine lives. You have to admit there's a bit of a discrepency here. I believe the high cost of the ring makes the intent quite obvious. If the intent was for the ring to simply function as a ring of heal, and still give you the saving throw option, it wouldn't be near as expensive.

No. You lose a level when you are brought back with Resurrection. With True Resurrection, there is no level loss.

But that's just the point. For three times the cost of a ring of heal, you still have an awful lot to worry about.

Anyway, I think the intent is pretty clear. YMMV
