Ring of nine lives qn

(c'mon, how often do you get knocked straight to -10, really)

I've lost a couple of characters that way, and my players have been dropped straight to -10 plenty of times, especially when you're talkin' about gettin' hit with high level spells.

Maybe, but you get so few charges that it doesn't really matter how expensive it normally would be. I only think the 9 autosaves are worth more than the heal if the DM rules that the Heal affect doesn't kick off until after you fully take all the damage.

Well, that would effectively make it into a ring of 9 true resurrections, and I doubt that was the intent....

Let's examine the ring. It's 70,000gp. It has a maximum of 8 charges. Let's assume we find one with 8 charges. That would be 8,750gp per charge. If there were 50 charges, the ring would cost 437,500gp. I don't know about you, but 8,750gp a pop is plenty expensive enough to completely prevent death.

Yeah. I can be pretty ruthless. I rarely ever pull my punches unless its for a plot device. In The Demon God's Fane, there are a couple of Fiendish Trolls that can deal out some real pain. I remember one hit where I smacked the Knight of the Chalice with 98 points of damage. It took him down to 4 hit points. The only reason he survived was because his Fighter/Rogue buddy (another player) got the attention of the trolls and diverted them away so the Knight could heal himself. Needless to say, his buddy didn't make it. :D He survived the adventure in the end, but not the fight. :)

By the description, if you go -10 or more, you die. Kreynolds has a good point, though. 8,000 + gold is more than a True Ressurection. Of course, having those Heals as a free action that are always on could explain the cost.

You could alter the ring slightly to make it automatic OR use activated. That should not change the cost at all, and you could use it when you are at 2 HP with a dragon bearing down on you.

hmmm so which is it... this item becomes crazy powerful in epic campaigns where a fighter can be hit for few hundred damage killing him but it contingencies a heal spell whenever this would happen, same for any other pcs... who needs clerics when you auto heal and can auto make saves....
