Rings of spell storing and metamagicked spells.

Question i just thought of while posting on another message -

When placing a spell into such a ring, do you count the spell's "actual" level - or the level it has been metamagicked to? This could REALLY be abused by that incantrix class... with some of the FRCS buff spells just packed into the ring...

I believe that by the rules Metamagicked spells only count their actual level for everything except for spell slots.

There is nothing preventing you from creating a wand with a spell metamagicked to 9th or higher, even though wands only store up to 4th level spells.

So this would also be the case for the ring of spell storing.

However, good luck trying to get it past your DM...And if you do, be prepared to face the same...

Having 6 1st level spells metamagicked to 9th level stored in your ring is a bit cheesey, but 18th level Wizards ooze cheese...

Sorry. I'm a bit undecided by this. I think that the rules allow it.

When you create a magic item using a metamagicked spell, you use the metamagicked spell level. (PHB, section on Metamagic feats in the Feats chapter, I believe.)

And that would be how you do it when using any sort of spell storing.

Incantatrix and Metamagic

IMO, an "Incantatrix-Metamagicked" spell is for item creation purposes (and thus for a Ring of Spell Storing) still a standard metamagicked spell. For example, an Empowered Cat's Grace is always a 4th-level spell, if an Incantatrix creates a Wand of Empowered Cat's Grace.

Actually it's a second level spell that uses a 4th (or 3rd) level slot. The only metamagic feat that increases the spells level is Heighten.

Yes, for most purposes. But it counts as the higher, metamgiced, level when making magic items. Which is what StealthyMark was alluding to.
Check the PHB, the Feats chapter.

K. Done. Anywhere in particular?

I re-read the difference between spell level and increased spell slot and read through the item creation feats as well as the opening section.

Can you quote what you are referring to please?

PHB, p.78:
Magic Items and Metamagic Spells: With the right item creation feat, you can store a metamagic spell in a scroll, potion, or wand. Level limits for potions and wands apply to the spell's higher, metamagic level.

Also, DMG, p.241
Using metamagic feats, a caster can place spells in items at a higher level than normal. For example, a caster could heighten a spell's level to increase the effectiveness, or quicken a spell to allow it to be used as a free action, placing it within an item at the higher metamagic level.

Ah. Gratzi. Read it twice, missed it twice. You're right.

In that case I'd have to say spell storing rings/swords/stones would work the same. Spell slot determines limit, not spell level.
