Based on what I've heard and seen (some of it first hand) I agree with Mystic Eye Doug on this one. If the idea is good enough, you should be able to find a publisher for the book. If not, you might want to get your feet wet by doing some work for hire from one of the other companies. Even if you do intend to start your own business later, it certainly won't hurt to build up some name recognition first.
