Role playing is not the opposite of combat

Sorry, "Samwise" is not only a terrible name, it's a terrible character. Nothing interesting or unique about him, except maybe that he's not really unique or interesting at all.

You're perfectly entitled to your opinion, no matter how surreal it may be. Because I am a great fan of surrealism, as I'm sure you all know. There's no better indicator of the colour of the sky in someone's vicinity.

Note that he's also not hacking people to bits, which was the original point of the post.

The point of YOUR post, dearie, was that a character is somehow less worthy if they're not "complex". I have just pointed out a character whom plenty of people find quite worthy, despite being not complex at all. (The fact that you may disagree is entirely beside the point.) Kindly to stop dissembling.

That I refer to confrontational situations is because the original post refers to combat. Maybe you read everything out of context.

The point of THAT post is that combat bunnies are just as legitimate a character concept as anything else you want to mention. Some people have somehow taken this to mean that a combat bunny can ONLY do combat, and be some sort of zombie outside it. Just because someone's main motivation is to kick heads doesn't mean they must spend every hour of every game session doing that.

It's all a matter of ensuring that the PCs know who has the blue circles and who has the red circles around their feet.

Perhaps more truly amazing is the number of people who end with a conclusion based on invisible or nonexistent reasoning.

Are you trying to STEAL MY SCHTICK?

Oh yeah. I forgot that connotations are irrelevant to the meaning of a word. My bad!

This would have worked a lot better if you actually knew what you were talking about.

Because when I say "intercourse" it's really got nothing to do with sex.

I just do not think that combat should be the motivation for a game. Hack and slash can be fun at times, but if that is the only interest of a character, then why play in a social game that includes story and RP.

One can just as easily ask the reverse question:

Roleplay can be fun at times, but if that is the only interest of a character, then why play in a game that includes combat and XP?

Goddammit Hyp, stop getting in the way of my roleplaying!

It's truly amazing the number of people who believe the only opportunities for roleplay exist in confrontational situations...

When I was a little kid my sister wanted me to roleplay with her in nonconfrontational situations (otherwise known as tea parties), so I do have some experience in nonconfrontational roleplaying. :D I guess theoretically you could have a D&D game based on a tea party, but what would you need all those character classes and rules for?

It's character building.

Actually, I've met people like that as well. Character building seems to be the only part of the game they enjoy... once the campaign starts, they find an excuse to say "This wasn't what I signed up for; I'm leaving." within the first few posts.

Every single time.

(Well, okay, so one person like that. But I've taken to starting a countdown every time I see his name on a PbEM player list...)

So, that's three - combat-only players, roleplay-only players, and character-building-only players.

... or was that not what you were talking about?

Can't you accidentally drown in your cup of tea on one of the Rolemaster Fumble tables?
