Roleplaying Despite Continually Horrific Rolls

1. Ditch your dice and buy new ones, as there are known weighting issues with some dice. I doubt this is the issue, but it might be.

2. Get a small notebook and start recording every die roll in it. Dollars to donuts, over time you will observe a normal distribution of rolls.

QFT. Despite this, I own multiple sets of dice, from many different manufacturers, and I swear that I have "lucky" and "unlucky" dice. I know it's not true in my head, but I still end up choosing one set of dice over all the rest disproportionately often.

Check out the GameS cience videos sometime, depending on if you believe what they say it is quite possible to have some egg shaped dice that roll "lucky" or "unlucky".

I feel for ya. I am in a similar situation.

My odds are a little bit better than yours, but if someone is going to fail that check or get a one in the party it is going to be me....

It is really a tough road to travel and can sap the fun out of the game for ya.

I have moved to using IPlay4E which has helped my luck a little bit.

Perhaps embracing it about all you can do unless the dice gods offer a respite or clemency. I am fairly well known in my group for my rolls.

Just know that you are not alone.....

I've got Game Science Dice. Believe it or not, they roll 20s far more often than most of my other dice. Disproportionately so. They're no better balanced than my "tumbled" dice.

I've actually been "banned" from using them when I DM. Like my players actually get a say in the matter. ;)

Yeah - I haven't done any dice roll offs with mine so all of my "feelings" about the Game Science are purely subjective. Though one thing I can say, with the crisper edges they don't roll off the table as much anymore which in and of itself is a benefit!

Funny!

Hang in there Carnival. Eventually your luck will change and you'll average out!

I have a player who has similar bad luck such as you. He takes it in stride. :)

I played in a game where the opposite happened.

I was playing a very naive "paladin"-type youth with the ability to make miracles happen - though not easily; chances were good that I'd screw up even the minor ones. My idea coming into the game with that character was that he was this devout kind of black-and-white guy who entered this shades-of-grey political situation.

Anyway, I kept going into these situations where his beliefs were put on the line. I ended up facing some really hard rolls (such as feeding a whole village from a single bowl of rice) that I was pretty sure I was going to fail... but I never did. Thus my character's beliefs were validated! I wasn't expecting that.

At the end of the game my PC succeeded in his main goal - to convince his father, the local lord, that worldly connections tainted everything they touched and the only way to properly rule was from a spiritual point of view. My father agreed, decided to spend time in a monastery, though only if I agreed to rule in his stead. I agreed in order to "save" my father, and at that point we all knew that my character had just irrevocably corrupted his worldview.

this might be a silly thing to say, but have you considered not rolling dice?

There are roles you can play where the dice-rolling is kept to a minimum. After all, if you're a defender, your main goal is to take his, and you don't ever need to roll dice for that. Likewise, your prime use as a leader doesn't truly hinge on die rolls.

It can be a bit hard to do in 4e, but if you believe your luck is as abysmal as it sounds, why not give it a shot? You can create viable characters that are still quite effective, even if they only ever roll 1s and 2s.
