Roles are so LIMITING!

I can understand that fear, but its based on a misconception. A greatsword doesn't make your character less of a defender and more of a striker. It increases your damage at the expensive of your AC in comparison to a sword/shield fighter, but that doesn't make you a striker. "Striker" means more than "high damage," it also means mobility at the expense of durability. And that's not what "plate armor" says to me.
I currently intend to be amused when people who think striker means DPR and defender means MMO Tank play a Warlock and find out they're doing less damage than the Fighter with the Greatsword.

Haha!
The irony is delicious!
I'm laughing on all those claims that 4E was becoming WoW because it now would have roles. "D&D is becoming a MMORPG, it has builds now!!!11!1!one!"
I'm Laughing Out Loud.
Thanks OP, I'm taking the day off now.

Hah! Good one, and most original. You forgot the "LOLRET", though, so only 8/10.

You sound bitter. Can't get in to the top ten DPS'ers in a ten person raid with your ret pally, I bet.

So apparently my fun required the destruction of your fun. Sorry.

This should be the new default argument for 4e supporters. It's like I'm sorry I'm not as entertained with "I hit it with my sword" as I was when I was 12.

Feels good to be in the target audience. :D

Paladins have 0 dps, that is a well-known fact. No need to make fun of them.

Ah, no, I'm all sweetness and light. I do find the inability to think past old preconceptions amusing.

I'm usually third or fourth, since I'm doing things like healing on demand, keeping judgements up, buffing, fearing undead, etc. It's utterly amazing how the flexibility provided by a ret paladin has helped, and we scale even better in a 25-man raid. Until recently we haven't had good gear, though, which hurt badly.

In 4e terms, WoW paladins are primarily leaders; healbots are, of course, just plain leaders (except meekly doing what they're told so they get to see purple gear*), protadins are defender/leader hybrids, while retadins are leader/striker hybrids.

And we know that this will be the case because of what? Honest question, I appreciate any evidence that dispells this fear.

Just because a fighter has a 3x[W] daily at first level doesn't make me confident that striker/tank isn't supposed to mean exactly that (DPS/Tank).

PS: *can't resist* One last comment about retribution paladins: Nihilum is now using them in their raids. It's also one of the classes who can look forward to the most drastic changes in WotLK (blue post, although knowing Blizzard, this announcement is more scary than hope inspiring)

The pregen warlock's best damage-dealing at-will power does 1d10 + Cha (+ 1d6 if the target has been cursed).

The pregen fighter's best damage-dealing at-will power does 1d10 + Str + 2 (+ Str again if there's an adjacent target).

Best I can figure the 'striker' role essentially means "pick your target," not "do the most damage".

Here's an "important" question: how do you pronounce "niche"?

I say it so it rhymes with witch, but I've heard people say it like "neesh". Yeah, I suppose a quick trip to a dictionary would help, but I'd rather know what people actually say, rather than what the dictionary says.
