Rolling for stats. Need some advice

Oh sure, I completely agree with you. The point buy is 32 already. I am just trying to work on the players who want to roll instead of using point buy. But I like my decision of 2D6+6 reroll 1s. So I think I am going to see how that works out. Thanks for the pointers tho, steamofthesky.

I see. In that case, don't change the rolling system at all, the problem is your players and their (probably influenced from older editions) views on character creation. Let them roll and get horrible stats*, let them feel the pain. Some things can only be learned the hard way. It may be tense for a while, but in the long run, you'll get a stable of much more rational players and be happier for it. I've had point buy in the last 10 games I've played in at least, plus my time DMing. Do you know how many people complained about about the point buy in all that time? That's right, zero.

*To be fair, though, IIRC there's some note that players should get to reroll if their net modifiers don't add up to +1 or +3 or something like that. So don't cheat them out of having the at least marginally above average characters the rules say they should have, at a minimum.

I don't have anyone complaining about their roles. It was just brought to my attention that players had scores very low due to the rolling system after I looked at their character sheets, which gave them an unfair advantage. I wanted to devise a way for players to have a balanced opportunity in whatever decision they decided on to get their stats. I honestly don't think it would be fair to not notice a player who had got scores of 8,9,10,10,12,13. I am just trying to make the game fun is all.

The problem with your system is that you have all the positives and negatives.

rolling for stats allows you to have incredibly high ability scores.

unfortunately you also risk having negative ability scores.

the system you propose removes that risk. Youll only have medium to high ability scores.

your odds of having an 18 in this system are significantly higher than normal system.

Chances are good that every player will have at least one 18, and many will have two.

I disagree, as each player may actually have a better chance at getting an 18, the odds of getting 10 or higher on their scores all remain the same, unless your assuming I am using fixed dice, in which I am not.

If you look on page 8 of your Player's Handbook, you'll see a section titled "Rerolling." It tells you that your scores are considered "too low" (and may be rerolled) if your highest score is 13 or lower.

So, yeah, the rules agree with you there.

I would just caution you against feeding the player mentality that the game isn't any fun unless you have awesome stats. Better in the long run to teach them that the stats themselves don't really matter; it's what they do with them that counts.

I think doing the 4d6 thing 8 times and letting them drop the lowest two scores sounds good enough to get your desired results without having to reroll 1's and 2's or other fixes

I agree with you. All I was trying to do is devise a rolling system that prevents the possibility of getting negatives on the results of some roles.

"was" Yes, that's the way we tried it the first time, which brought me to the thread.
