I am behaving. I'm just saying that I wished I had archived this as a PDF when the pics were up.

For what reason? Because I have to tell you, the idea makes me uncomfortable. None of those women gave permission to have their pictures posted on the internet (I assume. Ryan will correct me if I am wrong, I hope) and you don't know any of them. Why would you want to archive their images?

And Ryan, I think removing their pictures was an excellent idea. It would have been more prudent if you had never posted them, but at least you made it right in the end.

I would hope that if he was interested, it was because the presentation was funny, not because he's digging the oh-so-risque pictures of geek girls.

I'm sorry if I managed to offend you, Buttercup. It sounds like me putting images of people - nay, women (because you didn't seem to care whether I posted pictures of my male friends) - online strikes you as a violation of privacy or something. I just don't view the internet as special in that way.

This wasn't a "Babes of GenConRangerWickett" post. It was an illustrated story. If I misinterpreted your statement, my apologies, but know that I only took the pictures down because people were making a hullaballoo, not because I felt I was doing anything wrong. (Except for the middle finger picture. I realize that's actually still offensive to some people; I'd just been desensitized and didn't even think of it as anything vulgar.)

If you have something against photos being put online in general, I suggest you devote your dismay toward our rather large Photo Gallery here, and not at me. Pardon me, but I was just trying to be entertaining; I didn't expect the Spanish Inquisition.

Ryan, I think it is problematic to post pictures of women without their permission, in a way that it is not problematic to post pictures of men. Not wanting to stray into political discourse here at EN World, I won't elaborate. However, you're a bright kid, so I think you can probably figure out what I am implying. If you can't, feel free to PM me and I'll explain.

I'm not angry, and you haven't offended me. I just thought you exhibited less than perfect judgment. We all do that sometimes, you know?

*buzz* - that is where you are wrong unfortunately RW. The photos in the photo gallery were all put there by the individuals themselves, or in the instance of the 'Gencon Babes', told that their pictures were being put online. I think it is pretty safe to say that you weren't given permission by those in the pictures you posted to post their photos (and in the one instance their name!). I think that is what Buttercup was saying.

No one asked me if they could put my picture online in the few Gen Con photos there are of me. But I don't care if I'm up there.

If it was a list of "People who suck and are stupid 'n' stuff," then I might be upset that my picture was put up. But a gallery of "Here are some cool people I met, and some interesting things I saw" is perfectly fine by me. Hell, I'm much more disapproving of the "Here are some hot people I wanted to take photos of because they're hawt" galleries like the aforementioned 'Babes of Gen Con.'

I understand where Buttercup's coming from. People often assume that pictures of women, especially when posted online, are objectifying them. (At least I assume that's the problem. Otherwise, why is it bad to put pictures of women up but not men?) I personally disagree in this case, especially since the most skin shown in any of the photos was on my roommate Neil wearing shorts as he was flipping me off. But yeah, I can understand why she'd think it was inappropriate. I'm just a little more defensive right now than I'd like to be, so pardon me if I got a bit snippy.

Hey RW,

I thought it was a pretty cool original post, unfortunately there are those that will rtake advantage of pictures posted on the 'Net and such. Since I'm not one of them, I thought it was creative if not a little.......daring.

I think the difference lies in the context in which they were posted.

If you post a picture of a female ENWorlder hanging out at the ENWorld booth at GenCon, no big deal. In all likelihood, the person at issue does not consider her presence at GenCon part of her private life and does not care whether or not she is photographed or whether that photograph subsequently winds up on the net with the caption "Here is so-and-so of ENWorld hanging out at the ENWorld booth at GenCon. Yay!"

The context is completely different, and entirely more violative of someone's right to privacy when you take a photo of them in the context of their status as a past girlfriend, fling, or whatever. Whether the photograph portrays physical intimacy at this point is irrelevant - the presence of the photograph combined with your narrative represents an emotional intimacy. And that emotional intimacy is being spewed all over the net without their consent.

That is what is different, and that is (I *think*) what people are finding offensive.

Just a thought. :D
