Oh, so you're just doing that to hassle us, eh?

I've got the FAQ now AND I've got your number, bucky.

You, uh...you forgot the, uh, smilie, right Van?

-Does a wizard's toad familiar count against the 8-character limit?
-What about the sorcerer's housecat familiar?
-What about the druid's housecat animal companion?
[etc.]

Yeah, I forgot...the wizard's owl familiar was in there, too. That made it nine. So I guess we're going with "eight, same size as the caster," because I like that idea the best.

You know a funny trap would be the classic squeezing room trap. Put a rope trick near the roof filed with bricks, swords a wagon, 8 zombie elephants whatever. They party will detect the magic, and think its conencted to the squishing room, and try and dispel it. Out pops 8 zombie elephants.

Oh and the squeezing room, just stops on its own when it gets to the size of a 10 by 10 room.

But then nothing could move or everything would be flat.

I would put 8 Gray Slimes and have the room stop at the 10x10.

Or Galatinus Cubes. heheheh Anything that can swollow as just by moving over.

I don't know theres something to the party being smothered to death by zombie elephant butt that strikes a chord with me.

No, the PHB does not say that creatures of "ANY" size can fit. You just added that crucial word yourself. What it does say is that "You and up to seven others" (p. 246) can fit. The fact that the spell did not specify sizes one way or the other is no grounds for a player to assert a one-size-fits-all rule.

It's entirely compatible for the DM to rule that the spell assumes Medium-size "persons". Any similar published clarifications are also fully compatible with the written rule.

As a DM I take this to mean "You and up to seven other You's" so this spell is really only usefull if the caster has a few clones with him.

Players who challenge the DM over semantics crack me up :D

This is a pretty ingenius trap for a room, but I only have one problem with it. That problem resides in the fact that it is just blatantly killing off the PCs without giving them the chane to counter act the trap. They dispell it, and then they die. What fun is that?

If you did that to me, if I was a player in your game, then I would be a little disappointed in my DM. I would appreciate the chance to save my own life.

There be plenty of ways to stop it. Just don't jump to the obvious magic out. Which would be the point of traps like this, hopefully starting with less lethal versions. But the idea would be to ween people away from the hey I cast spells and I can solve anything with them crap. Start making skills useful again so the rest of the yabos can participate again other than being just meat shields. And besides someone tough enough might be able to cave his way to freedom with a dagger.

And if I agreed with them and let it slide, then next thing I knew, they'd be filling up the empty space with adamantium blocks and dispelling it just as their enemies passed beneath it.

Don't give an inch, I say! An inch!

Well, at least the adamantium blocks idea is right out:
"And I quote, Page 246 PHB:

"The space holds up to eight creatures (of any size)."

The blocks ain't creatures. Now, the colosal zombie elephants idea.....that would work....as long as you could get them to climb up the rope.
:D
