Round 2 is OVER

Druids, wizards and monks do not have simple weapon proficiency. I think all other classes are fully proficient with all simple weapons.

But I see no strong reasons for them to take SWP.

However, I'll vote for Martial Weapon Proficiency. Provided you aren't already proficient with all of them thanks to your class, why should you take MWP when, for the same cost (one feat) and the same benefit (proficiency with one weapon), you can take EWP and get a better version of the MWP. Like a bastard sword instead of the longsword.

If they had made a gradation:
  • SWP gives proficiency with all simple weapons;
  • MWP gives proficiency with a whole group of martial weapon, and six groups total (melee blunt, melee piercing, melee slashing, ranged blunt, ranged piercing, ranged slashing) and requires SWP;
  • EWP gives proficiency with just one weapon and requires MWP for the weapon group said EW belongs to.

... Then MWP wouldn't be as meaningful as a three-legged duck with all three legs broke. But as it is, it's a useless feat that is never taken. When someone wants to play an <insert class> that knows how to use a sword or a bow (the most frequent martial weapons), he just plays an elf. Otherwise, a single level of fighter gives all the proficiencies you want plus a free feat.

Tsk, tsk. It looks bad when you make a point that the poster immediately above you made. ;)

The point about MWP is well-made though. Note however that that relies on having a large enough selection of exotic weapons to draw from. It's not a simple "EWP instead of MWP" thing if you want a greatsword and only have the PHB, for instance.

Now if you have the Planar Handbook and flip over to the Jovar it's a different story...

I vote for all of the +2/+2 feats. They're an insult to skill monkeys, in much the same way forcing a character to take Dodge is an insult, but even worse.

Diligent if I have to pick one.

I'll probably do something about it next round. Not sure what. Perhaps lower the vote threshhold for such feats to be voted off. Or maybe clump the "+2+2 Feats" into a group and present it as a Feat in of itself. It woud be nice to preserve the integrity of the game, though. On the other hand, it would be nice to speed things up a little. And on the gripping hand, the "+2+2 feats" option is a feat which might actually survive longer then people suspect - I would wager that most players take a "+2+2 Feat" of some sort. (I do)

I'll think about it. Feel free to PM me if you have any other ideas.

Yeah, yeah, blame me for redacting a long post and browsing five forums at the same time... :cool:

Simple Weapon Proficiency

I think I agree with simple weapon proficiency. Looking at it from a prespective of its worth as a feat chosen, instead of looking it as an ability of most classes, it is entirely useless. As pointed out their are 3 classes that lack simple weapon proficiany. The monk is unlikely to ever want to get extra weapon proficianies of any type as the class is focused on unarmed combat. For druids and wizards if they ever wanted to take an extra weapon proficany, they would be far better off taking martial or exotic weapon proficanies.

So my vote is for simple weapon proficiency.

Run

RUN. Away.

If you had Far Shot, maybe you wouldn't have to run towards the enemy, and if you had some weapon and armor proficiencies, maybe you wouldn't have to run away. :p

Feats like the weapon and armor proficiencies, Improved Unarmed Strike, Deflect Arrows, Snatch Arrows, Stunning Fist and Track do walk the fine line between class abilities and feats. I suspect that they were made feats because someone argued that it shouldn't be necessary to take levels in class X just to get the ability.

Simple Weapon Proficiency looks to be on the way out, but it does have its uses. Assuming you had no weapon proficiencies at all, you could gain proficiency in a reach weapon (longspear), a ranged weapon (light crossbow), and a decent melee weapon (morningstar) all for the cost of a feat. Most martial and exotic weapon choices mean you have to pick one of the three.

And, wouldn't it be interesting if Simple Weapon Proficiency and Martial Weapon Proficiency got eliminated before Weapon Focus? I'm sorry - you don't have the choice of simple and martial weapons now. Pick an exotic weapon and focus on that. ;)
