I guess my take away from this is wait and see the book before you state that it is something you won't like, or it's anime+harry potter... You might be surprised by it.
I mean, marketing is put out there specifically to be hungrily devoured by impatient fans, and they can only go on what they've been shown. Waiting to be surprised by it kinda defeats the point of the marketing.

But what in the marketing makes it Harry potter? In this case specifically people are not looking at what WotC is showing them. They just see magic school and scream HARRY POTTER. That happened the same exact way in the MTG set, but afeter the set came out, most of those complains died out...

Comparisons to Harry Potter are inevitable, because of how much it's impacted pop culture. Every Space Opera is compared to Star Wars, every TTRPG to DnD, every genre show with a hint of politics to GoT, and every magical school to Harry Potter. That's to be expected.

Ultimately, what will sell this book for me isn't the setting, it'll be the tools and other materials. I got Theros, not really expecting or planning to run a Theros campaign, but for the piety system, other player materials and monsters.

Well sure. But to me aying "This book is not for me, I don't like Harry Potter" makes as much sense as "I'm not going to watch Guardians of the Galaxy, I don't want to watch a Star Wars movie"

If this is the only point you are engaging from my post, I take it then that the rest of my criticisms of your post are valid then and this is your last grasp for some sort of internet victory point?

I just didn't want to get into a long argument, precisely because I don't care about internet points.

But I won't be silent when someone claims the old editions of D&D weren't very different from the new ones. THEY WERE VERY DIFFERENT.

The idea that Harry Potter is new fangled to me is somewhat strange. I'm 37. The first book came out when I was in middle school. Not saying it has to be your bag, but it's not really all that new. I mean the actors that played the kids are all in their 30s.

I'd go look when I was released, but my soon to be graduating son pointed out the date of release on a record I was listening to the other day, and a piece of me died...

Is it troublesome and offensive if I say this looks like utter poo?

I so miss when D&D was darker and more Tolkien-inspired. Now it's Harry Potter, but as an anime.
Makes sense however, since the majority of D&D players in general either choose to play as their favorite anime character or as their idealized waifu/husbando.
Are we not yet past the one-true-way perspective? They literally just released a Ravenloft setting guide a few months ago that's as "dark" as you can get without making something R-rated. If Strixhaven isn't to your taste, COOL DON'T BUY IT. Stick with the stuff you like, make up your own setting, do whatever. It benefits no one to denigrate products just because they don't fit into your narrow aperture of preference.

I was only 6 when the last Harry Potter book came out. I've grown up with Harry Potter being a huge thing. It's older than I am.
I was 10 when the first movie came out, and almost 11 when I read the book. That made the series even more magical to me, because I grew up with the characters (If I remember correctly the newest book to come out at the time was 4). I hoped for a letter as a kid, became a teenager with them...

Sadly the writer ruined the franchise for me as an adult :/

I grew up with the later half of the movies, not so much the first half (I was only 6 weeks old when the first movie came out).

I also agree with the last sentence. It's sad, but I was never a huge Harry Potter fan. My younger sister is, though.

You got to learn how to compartmentalize.
Not trying to make this thread about this topic, but it's really hard for me to do that about this particular franchise. It's a world I really loved, being created by (and giving profit to) a person with beliefs absolutelly oposite from mine, who I believe does real damage to society. I can't forget that while reading/watching the story.
