This week, I review a sampling of TTRPG crowdfunding campaigns that end between May 9 to 15. I look at several Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition core and sourcebooks, enough to give a feel for what’s available at Kickstarter, Backerkit, GameFound, and more.

Adventure Time- The Roleplaying Game.png

Adventure Time: The Roleplaying Game from Cryptozoic Entertainment
  • END DATE: Wed, May 15 2024 3:00 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $220 + S/H for 15 lbs worth of content
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Cartoon Network's Adventure Time as a 5e TTRPG? For fans of the series, this game opens up new options to explore the world and to try a variation on the 5e ruleset. In the core rulebook you’ll find new rules for exploding dice, character origins, and Adventure Twists to make the stories feel like they are a part of the Adventure Time world. Originally intended for the proprietary Yes And rules engine, this campaign offers the more familiar 5e engine, which is likely to work better for some gamers. The campaign provides the core rulebook, adventure book, GM screen, map, dice, and more. If you’re a fan of Adventure Time, check out the campaign page to learn more and check out the stretch goals, each of which adds something special to the game.

I honestly would have thought the Adventure Time Kickstarter would have been much bigger based on the IP.

I thought about backing, but figured I would wait to see some reviews first. Lately I've been a lot more "it's going to come out so why gamble on a Kickstarter". That said I will back small publishers and independent writers on Kickstarter as I get why they need the platform.

603% of their funding goal ain't too shabby.

Adventure Time is a beloved show, and it takes a lot of inspiration from D&D, but . . . not sure how many folks are out there who want to play D&D in the Land of Ooo, regardless of the game system used.

It would be interesting to see data on the motivations of backers. "I love everything Adventure Time" versus "I want to play D&D in the setting of Adventure Time".

If you look at the responses to their ads on Facebook, a lot of people appear to be more interested in the Yes, And version coming at some point in the future. (2026?)
damned if you do, damned if you don’t…

They switched to 5e because of fan feedback, so unless they messed up, this should be the KS with the bigger crowd / interest. I can see some holding out since they did not drop the other system however

Just my guess as to why it's not yet a $1 million campaign -- there's a split audience.

Fighting about whether that was a good or bad decision should be kept to the other thread. We don't need to have every fight on every thread simultaneously.

Ideally, a single Kickstarter offering both game systems would potentially cross that million dollar line. That's a lot more work in the same time period, however.

Still, lots of publishers do it . . . offering D&D 5E alongside Pathfinder or OSR support.
