RPG Crowdfunding News – Avatar Legends, Forbidden Lands, CARBON GREY, and More

This week, I look at a collection of RPG crowdfunding campaigns ending between August 17th and September 3rd. This is not every campaign, just a sampling, but among the offerings are two 6-figure projects and the new highest funding RPG Kickstarter to date. But, no matter the amount of funds raised, each of these projects are worth checking out.

Avatar Legends- The Roleplaying Game.jpg

Avatar Legends: The Roleplaying Game from Magpie Games
  • END DATE: Thu, September 2 2021 7:30 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Powered by the Apocalypse
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $75 + S/H for PDF and print versions of the book and 5 adventures plus dice, a dice bag, cards, and 5 journals
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? This tabletop roleplaying game crowdfunding campaign is one for the ages having secured over double the funds of the next highest TTRPG Kickstarter. Avatar Legends brings the Nickelodeon cartoons, Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, to tabletop. Designed by Magpie Games using the Powered by the Apocalypse system, an engine they know so well that they teach classes about how to write for it, this campaign demonstrates what mixing the right property, system, and publisher can net the games industry. If you’re a fan of the cartoons, like the PbtA engine, or just want to see the RPG Kickstarter that has many mid-sized publishers reconsidering what numbers are possible through Kickstarter, check out this campaign to try out the quickstart as well as the many unlocked stretch goals.

Forbidden Lands RPG – Book of Beasts and The Bloodmarch.jpg

Forbidden Lands RPG – Book of Beasts and The Bloodmarch from Free League Publishing
  • END DATE: Thu, August 26 2021 3:00 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): Year Zero Engine
  • PROJECT TYPE: Sourcebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: SEK 588 + S/H for the PDFs and print versions of both books
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? This campaign adds two books to Forbidden Lands: The Book of Beasts and The Bloodmarch. The first is a bestiary full of lethal fantasy monsters as well as stunning artwork. The latter is a campaign book that details more about the world and offers a full campaign. The core rulebook for Forbidden Lands won the UK Game Expo Best Roleplaying Game 2019 as well as ENnie Awards in 2018 for Best Rules and Product of the Year (silver in both) and gold for both Best Cartography and Best Production Values. If you’re already a fan of Forbidden Lands, or you’re interested in a new kind of fantasy RPG that uses an award winning system, I recommend checking out this campaign.

Uncharted Lands- Book & STL Collection.png
Uncharted Lands: Book & STL Collection from Danny Herrero

  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $80 + S/H for the PDF and print versions of the book plus STL files
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? This project will create a 120-page 5e supplement featuring eight new locations, four new subclasses (Cleric, Fighter, Paladin, Warlock), a variety of new ancestries, adventures, and monsters. If you use miniatures for your 5e sessions, this project includes dedicated files to print the characters and monsters listed here. If you’re looking for a project to read as well as bring directly to the gaming table, this is a solid option.

CARBON GREY- The Role-playing Game and Omnibus.jpg

CARBON GREY: The Role-playing Game and Omnibus from Magnetic Press Play
  • END DATE: Fri, September 3 2021 6:00 PM EDT.
  • SYSTEM(S): D6 System (West End Games)
  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $179 + S/H for the PDF and print versions of the RPG boxed set and the graphic novel
  • WHY SPOTLIGHT THIS CAMPAIGN? Because this campaign sees the return of West End Games’ D6 System as revised by ENnie and UK Game Expo award winning creator, Andrew E.C. Gaska. This is the legendary system behind the first Star Wars RPG which accompanies many player’s happy gaming memories of yesteryear. This version of the engine is titled the D6 “Magnetic Variant” System. Combined with this revived system comes the CARBON GREY comic series, a dieselpunk world fighting their World War One. This RPG comes in as a 224-page core rulebook, dice, miniatures, cards, and more. Add to that, the campaign offers a 300-page omnibus of the comics if you want to get the full experience. If you’re interested in a preview of the engine, the campaign page includes a quickstart.

I love Mork Borg, but I feel like we may be reaching peak Mork Borg.
I love it as well. It's inspired so many creators that, despite the massive library of third party products, I'm glad to see how much it gets the creative juices flowing. I know there's a point of market saturation, but the passion around this system is what makes me ok with the output. :)
