RPG Crowdfunding News – Ptolus, Stibbles Codex of Companions, Pasión de las Pasiones, and more

Among the RPG crowdfunding projects that end between March 20 and 26, there are several that use Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition rules as well as some Powered by the Apocalypse options. Kickstarter’s ZineQuest 2 ran in February, but RPG zines are still rolling out into March marking this Kickstarter initiative as a success. While this is not an exhaustive list, there are some winning options below.

Monte Cook's legendary campaign setting, updated for Fifth Edition and the Cypher System. Ptolus: Monte Cook's City by the Spire, the classic and much beloved campaign setting, returns for 5e and Cypher System fans. We're reissuing the whole, deluxe product in two versions, one for each of these popular, critically acclaimed game systems. Ptolus: Monte Cook's City by the Spire is amazing. It’s not just huge – 672 beautiful pages plus hundreds of physical and digital extras – it also set new standards for physical production. In addition to the two new versions of Ptolus: Monte Cook’s City by the Spire, this campaign will also fund the Ptolus Player’s Guide in print and PDF. This is a 32-page book that gives new players a great overview of the setting and helps them think about the types of characters they might want to play. Like all of Ptolus, it’s steeped in details that bring the setting to life, giving players not just a sense of the geography, events, factions, and important locales that shape the campaign, but also a real sense of atmosphere.”

Pasión de las Pasiones.jpg
Pasión de las Pasiones by Magpie Games
“A tabletop role-playing game of deception, desire, and passion. Pasión de las Pasiones is a game of passion, drama, secrets, delights, and heated conflict. In Pasión de las Pasiones, you and your friends will play out the stories of the greatest telenovela ever to air—a telenovela called, of course, Pasión de las Pasiones. You won’t be playing the actors, directors, or camera crew; instead, you’ll be playing a scheming and dangerous character like El Gemelo, or you’ll be playing an innocent character, striving for love, like La Empleada. You’ll play through stories with dramatic reveals, explosive confrontations, evil twins, and more! Pasión de las Pasiones is a Powered by the Apocalypse game, drawing on game techniques and mechanics from games like Apocalypse World, Monsterhearts, and Masks: A New Generation. When your character takes an action that fits a move, the move tells you what happens in the story or you roll two six-sided dice to find out. The moves in Pasión provide their own system geared towards melodrama, excitement, and romance. Pasión de las Pasiones creates stories like those of Marimar, La Usurpadora, or Cuna de Lobos, but you don’t have to be familiar with telenovelas to play and have a great time! The game will ensure that you’re kept on track while creating your own telenovela, a show of such quality that it will go down in the annals of television history!”

  • PROJECT TYPE: Core rulebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $40 + S/H for the PDF and print versions of the game plus more
Princess World is a tabletop roleplaying game of action, adventure and problem-solving. Two to five players take the roles of various diverse Princesses, working together, for the most part, to deal with issues and concerns in Princess World, while one player takes the role of Weaver, who works with the other players to gather their ideas and choices into a shared narrative, with everyone playing to find out what will happen next. The game provides the players with the rules and framework to create their own worlds, realms and adventures and is designed to act as an introduction to the exciting world of role-playing games, particularly for younger players. Extensive play testing with both kids and adults has gone into the creation of Princess World. While it is a game made for kids, it's not a game just for kids; as well, interviews with younger players produced some surprising information about what they're looking for when it comes to gaming experiences! Princess World takes many of its cues from television shows such as My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and She-Ra and the Princesses of Power and books like The Princess in Black and Princeless.”

  • PROJECT TYPE: Sourcebook
  • MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $38 + $10 US S/H for the PDF and POD (or offset print version if the “King Bran’s Feast” stretch goal is reached)
Camlann Chronicles is a Welsh and Brythonic themed campaign for both 5th edition and the Lore 100 System. The Camlann Chronicles weaves together Arthurian legends and fantasy RPG tropes. Fledgling kingdoms, including the likes of Gwynedd, Rheged and Dyfed, fight amongst themselves for control of the mythic British Isle. The nobility of these fledgling kingdoms share the common dream of a united realm; though they are unwilling to bend their own knee. In this campaign, the struggle to unite the kingdoms of the British isle is primarily a fight between two human kingdoms, Gwynedd, in the South, and Moray, in the North. Gwynedd is the kingdom ruled by the hand of the righteous King Aeden; it is backed by the Fey, or Elves of Avalon. Moray is a Pictish kingdom ruled by the battle-hardened King Ungus, and backed by the Seelie, the exiled elves who were wrongfully cast into the darkness of Underearth by the Fey. If the Fey and their allies are champions of chivalry and the light, then the Seelie and their allies are believers of liberation theology and are quite comfortable lurking in the dark. The Camlann Chronicles will be a full color book of approximately 200 pages. It will include 4 full scenarios, 10 pre-generated player characters, settings section for a fantastical rendering of Welsh and Brythonic Britain, [and] description of important NPCs. Designed for 5e gameplay, with optional rules for incorporating character background, [it] includes the Lore 100 RPG system.

I WAS A TEENAGE CREATURE is a narrative-focused, urban fantasy tabletop roleplaying game that emulates a young adult paranormal TV show such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Teen Wolf, or even the Dresden Files. What keeps fans of this genre coming back for every single episode of the show? Is it the monster of the week...or the angst and drama of the main characters' lives? An exciting paranormal threat or creature certainly helps, but it's mostly the audience wanting to witness the main characters go through the emotional wringer (and hopefully emerge generally victorious on the other side.) In this game, that's exactly what happens...it's actually the point of the game. In IWATC, it doesn't matter how strong the werewolf is, or how fast the vampire is, or how beautiful the fae is...what matters is how each of these characters feels, WHY they're doing something, not just how capable they are of doing it. When the monster of the week invades Signal Lakes High School grasping the Hunter guy's mom by the throat, of course he attacks it...but why? Out of LOVE for his mother, or RAGE at the monster for threatening her? FEAR he's about to lose her? Or maybe he's PROUD to have learned the family business well and proves it by saving her all by himself! The Player tells their character's Story in this game, choosing why they do the things they do and how they try to do them. The I WAS A TEENAGE CREATURE core gamebook is the complete roleplaying game, all in one ~350 page book.”

I really can't afford to back another KS right now, but that Camlann Chronicles looks awesome. I already have done a very similar campaign called the Summer Isle where I have adapted that place and time period and changed the races of the people involved. Hmmm.

Tiny Cthulhu from Gallant Knight Games has all my attention and money right now. Can't wait for that book!

On a selfish note, I'm asking folks to look it over and pledge if you can because GKG has said if we reach $35,000, they will write a Tiny Cthulhu and Beach Patrol crossover...Beach Patrol: Innsmouth Edition. And I'm super excited for it! I love my gritty, atmospheric, Lovecraft as much as anyone...but there's something about Hasselhoff/Baywatch meets the shores of Innsmouth, hybrids, and cultists of Dagon/Mother Hydra that just tickles something perverse and corrupt within. Do I protect beach goers from otherworldly evil...or am I a hybrid lifeguard protecting the townsfolk of Innsmouth from nosey investigators on the beaches? Must...see this...in print! Can you imagine watching those tentacles sway in slo-mo beach running scenes?!? =)

In related news, and just highlighting what a great company Gallant Knight Games is, they have made their game "Tiny Supers" a pay what you want item on Drive Thru RPG for a limited time in acknowledgement of the coronavirus hardships hitting folks. With more and more people being stuck at home (adults and kids) and some with no or reduced pay, this might be just the thing to add a little bit of sunshine in otherwise dreary days.

If I wasn't already a proud KS backer and owner of the game, I'd be all over it.
