[RPG] Help me come up with a formula to calculate monster levels!

Umm... what about changing the algorithm used to calculate damage? For example, making defense apply in full instead of being reduced? Seems to me that this causes insta-kills at high levels... unless we make the HP grow very quickly as well, so that you can take boatloads of damage and still stand.

If you can write PHP, I'll gladly make the file available to you. Otherwise, we have to use what we've got. :)

A good difference or a bad one?

I've thought of a problem it could cause. With fights lasting longer, people will get a lot more XP from them. Think XP per attack should be reduced from 1-5?

The levels seem more in sink now, I think.

I can cost effectively take on an Ogre or a Troll now, which I couldn't before the change.

Of course, that also has the reduction of healing costs to thank. (Which is sweet).

I'm not sure what to do about the XP, though.

I wish I could tweak the PHP enough to make it level dependent. I keep trying, and think I'm halfway there, but just can't quite get my head around it. Part of the problem, of course, is that XP is dealt with repeatedly throughout the file, depending on whether it's player 1 vs player 2, player 1 vs a bot, player 1's summon vs. a bot, player 2 vs. player 1, player 2 vs. player 1's summon, player 1 vs. player 2's summon, a bot vs. player 1, a bot vs. player 1's summon, and so on....

Here you go, Merric. We need something which:

a) Requires more XP as you increase levels (perhaps by reducing the XP per attack by dividing it by your level?)

b) Makes weak creatures give you little-no XP, and powerful creatures give you lots.

So, hopefully, high level people won't bother with low level fights and will seek out appropriate challenges. That's the plan, anyway.

To find the relevant parts, just search for the text "1,5" -- anywhere that occurs, you'll find a bunch of lines which deal with XP awards. They're all very similar.

Morrus, would you be averse to a system that increased the number of fights you needed per level as you go up in level?

Thus, at 1st level, you need 5 fights against a Level 1 opponent to gain a level.

At 10th level, you need 20 fights against a Level 10 opponent to gain a level.

And so forth? One advantage being that it clusters the players closer together in level, and makes high levels really represent something (rather than being achievable in just a month?)

Cheers!
