RPG Print News – Cubicle 7, Pegasus Spiele, Game Tank, and More

This week brings an amazing wizard’s dice tower built out of toy bricks, adventures for D&D, and a Warhammer FRPG adventure and adventure support. Talisman Adventures the RPG is finally here in hardback so you can finally visit the land of Talisman and do what you want instead of what a 2d6 movement roll demands you do (and those hours of playtime make perfect sense now too). Also available is a screen for Pirates of Pugmire and decks of talents for Age of Rebellion.

Arcana of the Ancients - Where the Machines Wait by Monte Cook Games

  • PRODUCT TYPE: softcover adventure
  • RETAIL PRICE: $29.99
  • DESCRIPTION: A mega-adventure for D&D for characters of roughly 5th level. Secret of the Silver Spire | The Sacred Temple of Erwadu by Dungeoneer’s Guild Games
  • SYSTEM: Advanced Dungeons & Dragons
  • PRODUCT TYPE: module
  • RETAIL PRICE: $16.99 each
  • DESCRIPTION: In Secret of the Silver Spire (for levels 3 to 7) the PCs explore a strange silver tower that shines like a polished mirror that has recently appeared out of thin air. The tower is inhabited by strange creatures, such as the barzani ape-men, modrons of many types, and three-faced golden sentinels. The enigmatic overlords are the "silver masters" — alien beings made of pure energy. The spire’s maze of rooms is stuffed with strange equipment and curious items these creatures have collected from all over the multiverse. The module contains eighteen original black-and-white illustrations. Russ Nicholson (of Fiend Folio fame) created the cover art featuring the Spire and its alien inhabitants. The Sacred Temple of Erwadu, dedicated to the god, Enki, towers majestically over the marshes that cluster along the banks of the broad river delta. PCs of level 7 to 10 must survive four deadly levels. The inside of the great ziggurat temple likely holds vast treasures inside its fresco-lined chambers and mud-bricked walls, likely protected by terrible guardians that keep the unworthy from claiming them. This adventure contains background notes, a cutaway map of the temple, five new monsters, six variable endings, and 13 original illustrations to show the players. The referee can opt to play this module one of two ways — as a ‘Living’ or, ‘Lost’ temple.

Or life will be carrying on with trading, piracy, taxes, and the occasional bit of Chaos to deal with. Also included are new rules, the Warrior of Tzeentch Career, new river creatures, and The Emperor Luitpold, a luxury barge with a bevy of secrets in its holds and staterooms. related question-is Talisman a good casual boardgame?

Casual yes, with the base game. Some supplements are complicated. It is open-ended which means games can run for several hours. Nothing makes the game end if a player doesn't win on their own work.

You basically roll and move around the board interacting with spaces, cards, and other characters. You try to improve your character so you can get the Crown of Command and kill the other characters. Lots of killing in the game.

You increase stats, gain gold, gain Life, get Objects and Magic Items and Followers, and try to avoid becoming a Slimy Little Toad or getting killed. A story of sorts unfolds in a chaotic way, kind of like playing Basic D&D in a dungeon with random encounters and random treasure rolls.

It is my favorite board game. I love the characters and all the cards and the locations. I like the random events and dangerous fellow players and seeing what happens next. You just can't predict what is going to happen next and I really like that aspect of the game. Play to find out what happens.

The game has a metastory of sorts with new supplements bringing in a reign of dragons, the end of times, and a post-apocalyptic version (with a wrecked version of the original board) to play after the world ends (it even has a boom stick). I really like the Harbinger supplement and Blood Moon (which has a Halloween theme).

THere are two talisman board games...
the original "Talisman" - a bit fiddly to set up, often takes multiple hours to play, and the ending defaults to a last man standing via player elimination.
"Talisman: Legendary Tales" is a suitable casual. Play has ranged from 30 to 90 minutes for my group. It's pretty, It's a fairly different game mechanically from the original.

For the original, I'd say, "Not really, but some groups may find it so"
For T:LT, yes.

(and for Talisman Adventures, the RPG, it lacks the boardgame element but has just enough detail to do combat in minis mode easily.)
