An announcement and explanation about the RPGA dropping Living City.

Heh, that campaign. I have to smile and feel somewhat frustrated at the same time.

Anybody else here have some good times playing that campaign?

Despite the munchkiny treasure levels, whiny little children (of all ages), and terribly unrealistic modules and campaign plot twists, ABSOLUTELY. LC was kind of the "Beer and Pretzels, with no alcohol allowed" RPGA campaign, and I, for one, will totally miss it.*

Looking forward to living Eberron. Hopefully they can avoid the "Living Paperwork" style of gaming that Living Greyhawk and Green Regent have sort of become, while still retaining their seriousness.

*Of course, I'm talking about the old Living City Campaign, not "The Ruins of Ravensbluff," which I never got a chance to try.

These days, I think Everquest has a stranglehold on that style of game.

The RPGA should use a web-based system to cut down on the paperwork. It would probably be less subject to abuse than the current system.

Ah well.

Actually Green Regent already uses a web based system of character management. You character is kept by the RPGA and you download and print out copies when you want to play.

Personally I'm not overly interested in that big brother approach. Hence I have not tried that campaign.

The paperwork issue of Greyhawk is pretty minor IMHO, though I do know of several people who are put off by it. I do have to admit that my high level character does require a large stack of paper.

I played LC and LG for a while. I got sick of it for a few reasons:

1. Restrictions on race/class/etc. - all of the splat books came out with great new options and you could hardly use anything from them. Additionally, the idea of restricting options to certain regions kind of defeats the idea of fair play for all involved.

2. I got tired of the atmosphere that felt like you were penalized for not getting into the campaign early on in that they restricted options to only those who had the certs.

3. Got sick of showing up to a gameday and sitting next to people who needed a shower, adult supervision, or a mental health check-up. Of course, this isn't restricted to just LC/LG players.

I think part of the problem with LG/LC is the RPGA itself - in trying to make things fair and balanced, they've taken out a bunch of options that would make the game fun and unique.

Additionally, like LC, I see LG going the way of the dodo once Eberron is released, for a few reasons:

1. WOTC hasn't supported Greyhawk for about 5 years or so. Sure, the occasional article or adventure ends up in Dragon/Dungeon, but there has been no effort whatsoever to update Greyhawk with a new campaign set of some sort - something similar to Unappproachable East or Silver Marches that was done for Forgotten Realms.

2. Eberron will be More! Faster! Bigger! which will make the munchkins happy and RPGA will be forced to support it, since it seems that the efforts to get people to play D&D has given us the great unwashed masses of younger players who haven't received the benefit of being mentored by older players.

Is it too much to ask that we be allowed to play in a Meta-Campaign where the majority of the players don't fit the stereotype of "wierd, smelly gamer?"

Yes. An Era is at an end. My longest running PC is going to end up retired after Origins (since I can't make GenCon). Hopefully I'll have my copy of Dungeon today or tomorrow in the mail. But Ryan Dancey announced that he was dropping the license in January. On the LC-Talk yahoo group there's still a bit of info on the last two offical mods (One at Origins and one for GenCon).

I really enjoyed LC and the people I met through it. Sure, like any group there's a 10% a--hole factor and sure sometimes it seemed higher. But most of my experiences with the campaign were good. And I'm going to pass on LGR. The idea of them keeping my character up to date, and leveling my character yearly whether I've played that much or no is stupid. I sincerely hope the LGR experiment fails spectacurly (sp?). At least LG is no longer short for Living Ghetto. The current incarnation seems to work pretty well. I'm hoping to start some Living Arcanis to get in some psionic-y goodness.

Cordially,

I never played LC. I joined the RPGA for LG. But, I'm glad that the RPGA is giving the hard core players a series of 2 last adventures.

I totally disagree that LG will go away soon. It's wildly popular, and the RPGA develops the world of Greyhawk (mainly through the local "triads") . Just because it's not published in a book everyone can buy doesn't mean development isn't happening. In some regions, a lot has changed since the "Living Greyhawk Gazeteer" was published. And with the introduction of meta-regions last year, some regions get to develop plot lines that affect not only their own region but their neighbors as well. They've also tried world-changing events (the "ether threat" story arc) that affected *every* region (with varying results, though).

Of course, you may be right and Eberron may kill it. I just don't think so.

Kriskrafts and I have many fond memories of LC from our Convention days (1993 to 1998). We've each crossed over a LC character into our regular campaigns. Sure, there were several players that made it more challenging, but it was a generally fun system. Instead of always playing the same character we each had four different PC's that we alternated. The one I had the most fun with was a senile Dwarven Colonel whose personality was based entirely upon Don Quixote.
