RPGing and Alcohol.

It would be anywhere from "just plain odd" to "just plain inappropriate" for drinking to occur at any game I've run or played in. Plus my game starts on Sunday mornings -- that's just wrong! :)

A drink or two over four hours of game play will not interfere with the game. The problem is keeping everyone from not exceeding 1-2. Any more than 2 and you know how it works, 3 leads to four and fifteen leads to the floor.

Some groups allow drinking during gaming, others believe that it is a hinderance to the gaming experience and shouldn't be allowed.

What are the norms for your group or what would you say to a gamer who wanted to drink while gaming?

As a result of experience all the members of my group have settled down to drinking little if at all during games. We will often have a glass of wine with dinner, maybe a cold beer on a warm evening or a glass of good red on a cool one, and perhaps a liqueur or whisky later on: but never more than three or four drinks in an evening. My GMing goes to Hell when I am drunk, and it's no fun GMing sober for players who are drunk.

Anyone who came to my house and insisted on drinking when it was not socially appropriate, especially if he or she proved unable to hold his or her grog, would be most unlikely to be asked to come again.

Beer. And other...stuff.

It's all good.

Edit: To actually answer your question, my 'group' is friends first and gamers second. We know each other well enough to know how we should behave. Drinking (or whatever you want to do) is encouraged if it helps you have a good time.

YMMV

We usually drink and sometimes a doobie but not too often. I do pack the sad though if someone is not keeping up with things , which means an encounter = party level + 4.

Only let them drink alcohol when their characters drink potions. :D Oops, the party is buying a lot more potions than usual. :)

We often drink and virtually always smoke tons of pot when we game. Despite that, our games (both the ones I run and the ones I play in) are tons of fun for everyone, get very complicated and intricate, and I rarely have room to accomodate all the folks who want to get in on my campaign.

I think that the key word is "gaming." It is a game. The purpose is to have fun. Drink or do not drink, it really doesn't matter.

True, but the fact that it's a game doesn't have any bearing on whether you should drink or not. I don't like being around drunk people and most of my players don't understand the meaning of "moderation", so drinking is out of the question. There's also the fact that, quite often, players need to drive themselves home afterwards. There are a lot of reasons why heavy drinking at an RPG session is a bad idea.

Just my opinion, though.
