Technical difficulties...

Anyone know what the problem was (somewhat more specific than 'technical difficulties')?

By a quirk of fate, I happened to be on the site about 5 min before it was shut down... some of the php database calls were breaking (I am not super-familiar with PHP, but it appeared to me that a call had been made to the database that locked into an infinite loop - you could view products but could not lock in or purchase)... also, some of the product info (dynamically loaded onto the front page) was not showing up but instead returning PHP file calling errors. I tried logging in and couldn't.

When I checked back 2-3 min later, the "we are having technical difficulties page was up."

Again, I am not a PHP programmer, but my guess is that somehow their database and/or PHP goofed (Whether that was bad code, a server flaw, a hacker, or whatever I have no idea) and/or they inadvertently put themselves into an infinite loop... which may have required a complete shutdown of the server (and if they are hosted off-site from their offices, that can take some time).

That's all the extra info I can add as someone who saw the site start to break down.

Thanks Sigil! I'm not great at php (yet) either, but i do remember reading that there was a security problem, there is a new release out. I'm just kind of curious how such things can happen, and if at all possible, how such things can be avoide in the future...

For what it's worth... I and several staff were away during this time and what happened was our hard drives got filled up with log data... so the database stopped saving data and that is BAD in unix. Very bad.

Anyway, dialing in remotely I finally fixed the problem (after taking a while to find out the source of the problem).

This was the only time RPGNow.com was down for more then a few hours in over a year. Our track record is excellent. We're back to full staff now at RPGNow.com and RPGShop.com so enjoy!

We'll be around for a long time, I assure you all. We're getting new vendors constantly and the community support has been great. Thanks to you all for your continued support!
