Darnit. I couldn't even hold out for the weekend, I had to buy it at work.

Quick skim through: Not too shabby. I'm sure I can find some use out of it in the long run.

Awesome, thanks for the vote of confidence jez and glad you're liking it so far! :)

The idea of using talent trees is a good one - I'm embarrased to say I didn't think of it - but wouldn't characters with advanced classes miss out?

Actually, there's nothing to say an AdC can't have a talent tree. In theory, every class has a tree, you just don't get to select which order you take stuff in. :)

Chuck actually wrote a number of trees for Haven: City of Violence AdCs, and I thought that the use of trees for Advanced Classes was innovative. I don't think anyone else took off with the idea, but there's merit for it.

How tied-in to d20 Modern is this? For example, would it be useful for other gaming systems (such as Top Secret/S.I.)?

I'd say it's 50/50.. A good portion of the book is feat/skill uses. I don't know how much of that is convertable to TS/SI.

The first 20 pages or so are d20 rules based. The last 20-23 pages are more general, GM informational sections about agencies/sub-agencies, and a guide to running a cold war inspired spy type game.

Hey, glad to see this is out. Congratulations Mike and Chuck! If this is what I think it is (and correct me if I'm wrong, Mike), buyers won't be disappointed.

Sorry to hijack, but I'll keep it short. I've been using talent trees with recent SEP releases such as Roles & Classes, Modern Medieval and the upcoming Covert Forces Redux. Personally, I love talent trees. They allow so much more customization of characters.

Now, back to the cheerleading for Cold War. Yea!

I'd even argue that the discussion about character archetypes is general enough for a non20 game. I played 1st edition TS rather than S/I, so I can't say if there were specific rules in the latter that the new book's mechanics cover.

Thanks, Fraser - and you're right.

I wanted something that would work with the best d20 Modern has to offer - like the classes you and Chuck come up with regularly.

Cool. Now I'll have to check out some SEP stuff. I like the flexibility of being able to choose my class abilities as well. It's one of the great parts of True20 (no abilities, just tons of feats).

And yes, I think some of the chargen info in the beginning may apply, however it gives suggested d20 modern classes (instead of creating a ton of new redundant classes) to fit the archetype. I'm not sure how well that translates over to TS/SI.

Either way, I think a non d20 modern game would get use out of this.
