RPGs in Target!

Does Toys-R-Us still exist? :P

I bet if it does well enough, it'll branch out to other big chain stores pretty quickly.

ooooohhh... Now all we need is another D&D = satanism scare, and we'll be back in business! :P

You joke but I would bet big money on the whole D&D is EVIL! thing as having added thousands of new gamers back in the day. Teenagers are naturally attracted to things their parents hate. I think its a universal law.

I think it's both a good and a bad thing. In general, I think it's a good thing because it broadens the hobby to a wider audience. However, some people who don't know what rpgs are might also be lead to believe that the way D&D plays is the only thing playing a rpg has to offer, and the only way to play a rpg.

I remember seeing what I think was 2nd Edition at Toys-R-Us way back when. I was a kid who had seen it in the store, and it seemed like something I would like. I saved enough money from doing chores around the neighborhood to buy a few books only to go to Toys-R-Us a few days later and be told they no longer sold the product due to complaints from parents.

Well, that's a risk when introducing anything to anyone. You play a song for them, and they think all rock music is like that one song. You take them to one Chinese restaurant, and they think all Chinese food is like what they ate there. They play their first RPG, they think all RPGs are like that game....

Perspective is not something anyone can gain from a single exposure. This does not constitute an argument against initial exposures.

So they shouldn't be exposed to any RPGs? Or should WotC add a sticker that says "This is one RPG but there are lots of others you should try instead!".

This is a pretty weak argument against bringing D&D into stores like Target.

/dark humor on

don't worry we are working on that
The Blotter | Puyallup man charged in rape murder of 16-year-old girl | Seattle Times Newspaper
if you read the details of the murder rather than just the synopsis I linked you will see hes a D&D Online player so obviously D&D and Video Games are to blame for his behavior, plus hes got long hair and you know how evil hippies are!

In his defense, if I had to play DDO very long I'd be homocidal as well. What a terrible game.

/No, really. It's a terrible, terrible game, and even at $free it's not worth playing

I wasn't arguing against the game being in a store. I was simply stating that there may be a few unintended side effects. Overall, D&D 4e generally has a specific type of experience in mind and that it is geared toward. Not all rpgs share the same philosophies. I think it's a positive thing that D&D is again accepted into more mainstream stores; however, for the mental health of the hobby as a whole, I'd prefer that D&D not be the only presence.
