In my pirate campaign, guns are used along side medieval weapons and are used like any ranged weapon. Abilities/feats that affect ranged weapons, affect guns. Abilities/spells/feats that affect arrows, also affect bullets. Guns do more damage than ordinary ranged weapons, but the trade off is a long reload time, limited range and a possibility for dangerous mishaps on a 1. Also, some spells can render you completely invulnerable to bullets, as can also be done against other projectiles. Yes, you can carry a dozen preloaded pistols that you fire in a row without reloading. That is after all how real pirates fought.
How much more damage do they do? As I've said, if they can only be fired every other round, they would need to do twice as much damage as, say, a crossbow, to break even with them. Also, in most fantasy games that include them guns tend to be very expensive. Carrying six with all the incumbent ammo and powder is often prohibitive.

They deal 1d10 damage and triple damage on a crit. And yes, they are expensive, but not prohibitly so. But its possible to fire multiple preloaded guns in one round, as long as you have enough attacks and guns.
