Rules Changes Significant?

So from 2e to 3e the change was significant.

'Significant' to my mind conjures different images than 'dramatic'. Maybe its different for you.

And from 3e to 4e we will have the same type of change. I fail to see the big deal.

I didn't say that you'd see "the same type of change". I said that the changes between 3e and 4e would be more signficant and dramatic than all the changes between 1e and 3e combined.

O.k., I will reformat my phrase to make it clearer. IMO the changes from 3e to 4e will be as significant/dramatic/whatever as from 2e to 3e. There are new elements in both changes, both in crunch than in fluff, formulaic conversions won't work as they didn't work before, power level will change as it changed from 1e to 2e and from 2e to 3e. Some changes will be more liked than others. And in a few years, we (or people like us) will have exactly the same argument about the dramatic changes from 4e to 5e and who the change from 3e to 4e was smooth. As people said about 3e before 3e release.

O.k., maybe I'm wrong... but I don't bet on it.

I'm pretty sure Horacio's guess is closer to the truth than Cerebrim's. D&D 3rd.ed. was a completely different game from AD&D 1st./2nd.ed. Except for the typical 'D&D vibe' there are hardly any similarities. Mechanically absolutely nothing stayed the same! Some of the game terms were carried over but they described entirely different things.

4th.ed. will clearly be an evolutionary step for anyone who's been using some of the more recent supplements in their games. It will not be a revolutionary new system or at least nothing I've seen so far indicates it will be. Or maybe I've just been smoking crack ;)

Compare the Star Wars Revised Core Rulebook with Star Wars Saga Edition.

That's probably going to be about how different 3e and 4e are.
