Rules for Making Poison?

Are there any clear rules for making poison? A character in my game has Profession (apothecary) and we agreed it would give him knowledge and the creation power in regards to poisons. Now he wants to make some and an wondering if there are any better guidelines other than what I have laid down (essentially, costs half to make, takes time, not sure how much, and he shouldn't assume he could make everything).

I don't know if it's any good, but there's a little about making poisons in Song & Silence. Different DCs to create and a little more.

I also believe it has been touched upon in some d20 supplement, but I don't remember which one. It might be Traps & Treachery by FFG.
 

Ouch - wrong skill

The manufacture of Poison is under the Alchemy skill - using it in it's "craft" capacity - instead of its knowledge capacity.

The DC you must hit to make the toxin is equal to the DC of the poison's save, whatever that save is. The "time taken" is under the craft an item rules - setting a "cost per dose" for the item.

Steps to do this:
1. Take the cost of the item - convert to silver pieces

each sucessful craft check results in progress:
DC * check result in silver pieces

When total progress = converted cost:
item is made.

IIRC - the default rule is one check per day - but this leads to some ludicrous creation times... I allow one check per hour of work the character can perform.

If the alchemy skill is on the player's class skill list - you are best to make a substitution outright. If not... you are going to have to pull a rule 0 fiat of some kind.
 

Well, S&S has other DCs than the save DCs, which makes sense, and uses Craft (Poisonmaking). Doubtless an effort to let Rogues, druids, and their likes make poison, and not just Wizards or Sorcerers.
 


Rokugan uses Craft (Poison) to brew poisons. It's a class skill for the Ninja and the Rogue.

Brewing poison requires a Poison Lab. They provide a table of Brew DCs for the various common poisons. Each brew attempt also has a chance to poison the character, unless they have the Poison Use ability (20% for animal poisons and 10% for other types.).

You also have the ability to increase the save DC of the poison by increasing the brew DC.
