ruling question on instant and ability

I was playing and i had an instant, it was destroy target creature, my opponent wanted to play an ability off the creature i wanted to destroy. the ability was sacrifice clerice and target player loses two life and he gains 2 life, can this ability be played if i pulled the instant first?
