Running Delta Green

First Post
Hello all, I've been setting up a Delta Green CoC game and i've hit a brick wall.

I've decided to make Delta Green an official agency with the US government deviating from the norm timeline where they go rogue, and preform operations with heavy support from the government, the Mi-Go and MJ-12 wouldn't be as prominent an enemy as in the normal Delta Green game.

but while i was setting up some scenarios, i realized that nearly all the creatures presented in the CoC book are completely invincible. which i expected, as that's the nature of CoC the insignificance of humanity and such.

But how would Delta Green engage something like a Mi-go or anything with damage resistance from non-magic weapons?

I could change it, and remove Damage resistance and such but that risks the nature of the horror of being insignificant and weak,

Lastly what would be some good mission ideas for Delta Green?

how about your guys fight a rogue division of Delta Green?

My story hour uses a similar premise that you might find useful: http://www.enworld.org/forum/story-...een-beginning-end-updated-daily-feb-17-a.html

Although I use D20, much of the basics still apply -- going toe-to-toe with monsters doesn't work. The agents have to find alternate means to defeat the monster, be it a ritual, explosives, or killing the cultist who summoned it.

If you're talking about the Great Old Ones, then it's almost always a ritual. Very few of them can be beaten in toe-to-toe combat, and when they are the scenarios that present them include a weakness the players can exploit.

I also write a column on action horror gaming that details a lot of the challenges in running this sort of game: The Horror Column Listing - RPGnet

Ah never thought of using rituals for defeating the monsters, i am also using the d20 rules

I actually remember reading from one of the Demi-gods, the elephant like one, the one time he was defeated by investigators and sent to the past through a ritual.

Are there any rules official or Homebrew for such rituals?

Some books you may want to look up - The Atrocity Archive and The Jennifer Morgue, both by Charles Stross. The main premise is in fact a legitimate Agency who's job it is to deal with Incursions. Delta Green is even mentioned in passing. :) The Cubicle 7 BRP game 'The Laundry' is based around those books, and can provide a nice balance for Delta Green.

One thing in The Jennifer Morgue that kind of clicked was the idea that most Deep Ones feel kind of the same about the ones trying to bring back Cthulhu as many humans feel about those who fly airplanes into the sides of buildings or blow up clinics. They may share a base religion with those folks, but those people are crazy!

But guess which bunch of Deep Ones are more willing to suffer the discomforts of coming ashore to promote their interests....

Almost unilaterally there "plot rules" not rituals in the d20 Modern sense.

However, I did use those rules (consecutive Arcane Lore checks that required five successes to banish the monster) in one of my story hours where a status of Tsathoggua came to life.

The elephant god you're referencing is Chaugnar Faugn.

Generally speaking the plot rituals are "kill this cultist before he finishes the chant" or "destroy this altar" or "blow out these three candles" or "break the pentagram." The challenge is for the agents to figure out what this is -- that's where the first part of typical Call of Cthulhu, the investigation part, comes in. If the PCs do their homework they know how to defeat the beast, if not...well then they do things the hard way just as you described, slug it out, and probably die.

With d20 you can at least use heavy firepower to potentially "win" battles against some of the Mythos beasts. But definitely not the Elder Gods.

Of course, my next story hour will attempt just that. Eihort, you're going DOWN!
