Hey all,
I've been DMing a campaign set in a homebrew world for about 10 months now. Most of what the party has faced has been self-designed. We tied up a 7-level story arc, and lost the Bard to moving to Germany (grad school, pfft!) two sessions ago, so I figured it was time for something different. Last session, last night, I started running Lord of the White Field from Dungeon 184, completed the second encounter and I must say, this adventure is really great so far!
First off, the atmosphere is amazing. The fog got an audible UGH from the group when they realized it was bone dust, and when the character remembered the connection to Doresain's realm, one player remarked how effing cool it was (AWESOME)!
The second encounter ended up being VERY memorable. The party (Level 8, Paladin, Sorceror, Avenger, Barbarian) is in a farmhouse, holding off a ghoul onslaught and protecting a family. We only have a party of four now (AND NO LEADER!), so I axed two of the Starving Ghouls and three of the minions, but it still was a VERY tough encounter for the party. They started by getting the family upstairs with the Sorcerer, but were in for a rude awakening when Ghouls started climbing the side of the house and crashing through the windows upstairs (UH OH!). The Sorceror, in the third round, was hit by a crit the Starving Ghoul that climbed the house, which bloodied her, and triggered it's Blood Lust, which didn't crit, but rolled EXTREMELY well, and put her 2 hitpoints off negative bloodied, the closest call this party has had to a death. The Avenger had to then get upstairs, because one of the minions had grabbed one of the little girls and was trying to make off with her for a snack.
The party ended up prevailing, and no family members died, but the encounter really put the fear in them, and now they're absolutely TERRIFIED to head into the city that might be teeming with the undead. SUCCESS!
Seriously, if you haven't run (or read, even!) this adventure, yet, consider it. It's real great.
