D&D 5E Rust Monster Preview

I wonder why it says "...corrodes an object it can see within five feet...", then talks about touching it the rest of the time.

Not a big deal, just wonder if there is a nuance I'm missing or just a typo.
 

Not as potent as the AD&D one, but still enough to give the fighters pause ;)

The picture is cool but the creature itself is not at all something that would make adventurers flee in terror.

1) No chance to affect magical items.

2) With mending as a cantrip and the many hits that it takes to actually destroy an item, even mundane gear is unlikely to get rusted out before the party puts the monster down.


My version of the rust monster would use the rules as presented against MAGICAL items.

Normal gear gets dusted at first contact.

Good point. I missed that. Maybe a greater rust monster? One beefed up a bit and a higher CR, so the creature remains a threat at higher levels too?
 

Oh good, magic stuff is now completely protected. What's that? It got into your thieves tools? Oh, that's unfortunate.

We still need an evil grin smiley.
