S1: The Strange Case of Aif Jenkins' Farm (E13 judge) - Concluded

[sblock=Euesbius][color]"I have nothing beyond normal means, no. I suspect he is too drunk to try anything, but I can watch him if you wish. Perhaps we should watch our horses as well. Boog, on the other hand, may be able to violate their minds."[/color][/sblock]

"Banion, Beamer, please excuse me. I must speak with Boog privately."

Eusebius leads Boog aside with Juliana, and whispers to them.

[sblock=Boog & Juliana]"I am concerned that Toler and Rafferty may not be ... reliable. Did you notice the way that they were surprised when I mentioned Torvin? And they seem to have broken off the conversation very quickly."

"The high priest advised me not to publish abroad the real reason I am seeking Torvin. It is why I have been so miserly in my description of our quest. It seems, however, that I have given away more than I meant to - and yet, how can that be? I have said nothing untoward - only that I seek an individual. Why should these two respond in so pronounced a fashion?"

"Boog, is there some way you can read their minds? I think they might be about to sneak off and advise ... someone, an enemy no doubt ... that I am seeking the paladin."

"And I must ask both of you - do you think we can trust the halflings? They seem to me to be, if not law-abiding, at least good at heart. But what do you think?"[/sblock]

Beamer answers, "Of course, of course. Just don't leave without talking to us some more." He moves over to Banion, but noticing him listening, chooses to not to say anything.

OOC: Editted for Patlin's post.

Boog gave Eusebius a look of condescension. "Of course I can", he replied. "Consider it done."

Boog shrugged. "I think they're a little more boring than they claim to be. Other than that, I couldn't say."

As soon as their backs were turned, Boog turned his powers on Toler and Rafferty. He tried to control the psychic emanations flowing from the use of Power, buf failed. Boog winced as he and everyone within a few paces heard a distinctive chime inside their heads.

[sblock=Ooc: ]Manifesting Read Thoughts, 31/34 PP remaining. The mental display of the power is detected by everyone in a 15' radius, centered on Boog. The actual power affects all in a 60' cone, DC15 Will save negates. Boog will aim the power at Toler and Rafferty, but it will affect anyone in the cone. If anyone makes their save and is aware that someone is using psionics against them, Boog will Bluff that he's not the one doing it (Bluff is at +2).[/sblock][/sblock]

First let me say 'sorry' if this thread has been slow going so far. It hasn't played out quite as I expected. (not that this should surprise me - my players never do quite what I expect them to do, which is probably for the best.) If anyone is inclined to reread their part of the thread, there were a couple clues dropped that no seemed to pick up on. Anyway...did I mention that this thread would be combat heavy?

Toler and Rafferty stand and move to the door. Boog, Juliana, and Eusebius step away from the table. Rafferty has picked up a beautiful black metal-inlaid heavy crossbow from under his chair. Toler carries the empty saddle bag which contined his wine.

The halflings would have to make a DC 26 listening check to make out what the humans are saying.

Before they leave Boog tries his telepathy. All the heros hear the distinctive chime in their heads. Boog is unable to read any of Rafferty's thoughts. Toler's are along the following lines

Boog: [sblock]"So the temple of Hyrag is actively searching for Akenthrasher. These guys could be trouble. It probably doesn't matter though. By tomorrow, they'll be dead." [/sblock]

[sblock=Eusebius & Juliana: ]Boog casually manifested a second Power, one that would let him converse with Eusebius and Juliana without speaking. This time he succeeded in suppressing the mental chimes - practice did make perfect, after all. "Toler thinks that we present some sort of problem because of your search for that Torvin fellow", he thought to his companions. "Toler isn't worried about it because he thinks we'll all be dead by tomorrow. I suggest we check for poison, traps, and assassins. Think we should tell the haflings in case he wants them dead, too?", he asked with his thoughts. "Maybe I should just charm Toler into telling us how he thinks we'll die", he mused "aloud".[sblock=OoC: ]Manifesting Mindlink 1 PP cost + 1 PP to augment so that Juliana can join the link at the same time. 29/34 PP remaining.[/sblock][/sblock]

[sblock=Boog & Juliana]"By all means try and find out what Toler has in mind for us. And yes, we owe the halflings a warning, since they are probably in danger because of our mission."[/sblock]

For the third time in a few moments, Boog used his Power. This time, he wasn't so fortunate in suppressing the loud chime that everyone standing near him heard inside their head. In addition, Banion and Beamer each felt a presence within their mind. Instead of menacing, however, it felt benign...like someone knocking before opening a door.[sblock=If Beamer or Banion choose to accept the presence: ]The halfling became aware that the mental intrusion was emanating from Boog, who was looking in his direction. "I see you've the sense to learn how to communicate properly", came his message. "You should know that Toler over there sees us as some kind of problem that he expects to be solved by our death. I'm not sure if he includes you in that description or not. Oh, and whoever is going to be dead is supposed to be dead by tomorrow. Maybe you did bring me some trouble."

The halflings sensed that if they merely projected their thoughts at Boog, that it seemed likely that he would somehow hear them.[sblock=OoC: ]Manifesting Mindlink, 1 PP + 1 PP to augment to include both halflings in the link. Display suppression was d20+9=12, failure. 27/34 PP remaining.[/sblock][/sblock]

Was the food poisoned, or does he intend violence? Banion projected back across the link.

"Be ready for anything, Beamer."

Banion will melt into the shadows at the earliest oportunity. (Hide +15: He'll take 10 by preference.)

Once hidden, he'll manifest a mindblade, keeping the blade as concealed as possible.
