S3: The Scythe of Seto (Bront Judging)[Completed]

Rasereit is mostly fine with the plan for distributing the gold, though he mentions with a shrug, "Finders keepers, 'tis Mongrel's way, s'all Ah'll say." He does spend some time finding the families if possible, and he tells them that the traders were killed by bandits, who were brought to justice.

Rasereit sells the adamantine pieces he found in the wilderness for 300 gold. He pays Beamer back the 75 gold he borrowed, and also spends 100 gold on a chain shirt for nighttime wearing. He also asks around about the best way to protect a horse in battle while still keeping her unburdened, and he decides to invest 400 crowns in a suit of light chain barding for his horse. "Ah've let two o' me gel's dahn nah, Ah won' let it happen agin."

While at the Magic Emporium, Beamer takes a look around at the stocks. He's especially curious about any magic weapons Chet might be selling and looks them over for any kind of smith's marks.

He doesn't make a fuss about the splitting of the finder's fee. He'd rather keep it for themselves, but understands that legally it should probably mostly go to the families. Either way, he's not going to stick his neck out and risk angering any of his companions.

The group is able to track down the relatives of the slain merchants. They are very sad to hear about their loved ones, but happily accept the cash and shower blessings on the heroes for their generosity and information.

The group finishes its business in Havertown and hits the road again. They try to avoid prolonged exposure to other travelers, and have no further unpleasent incidents. At last they reach the small stockaid where they first met 'Toler' and 'Rafferty', whom they now suspect are assassins working for Seto.

The stockaid is more heavily guarded than last time Beamer Banion and Eusebius stayed there. Spikes and wires protrude from the wooden walls, perhaps to keep leaping dire wolves out. It is still an inn, but one that has been nationalized by the Rivensblight military. Otherwise, it would have been abandoned. The rates are slightly higher, but not unacceptable.

The group decides to spend the night there as it's getting late and they hope to find Reinert the dwarf. Sure enough, as they stable their horses, they see the familiar loaded wagon Beamer and Banion rode up from Rivensblight on a few weeks ago. Entering the common room, they see several travelers sitting at the dinner table. Some have already finished dinner, and are drinking or smoking or just talking. There are 2 elves, one of rather dark complextion, 1 half-elf woman, 2 halflings, 4 men, and one dwarf, the redoubtable Reinert.

Ogrin leaves the talking to Eusebius and the halflings, who have already met the merchant. Instead, he concentrates on spotting dodgy behaviour in the rest of the clients (cheating at games, pickpocketing etc) - just for the fun of it.

OOC: ...but with -1 to spot and sens motive, he's not likely to find anything. :(

Rasereit, rowdy and boisterous as usual, drinks twice as much as anyone else and spends the evening telling tall tales, playing cards, and challenging people to arm wrestles. He keeps his breastplate on, as much out of pride as wariness, if not more so. His shield rests by his feet, and his axe is at his hip. He never keeps his weapons far from him, especially now when even innocent passersby can be horrible foes. But he doesn't let his past experiences stop him from having fun. He'll also let those more familiar with Reinert do the talking.

Beamer is relieved to see Reinert's wagon. He was not looking forward to the prospect of finding Trimble's workshop all on their own. Hmm. Now how to get Reinert to tell us, or better yet take us to, where Trimble's shop is located.

"Hmm, I don't see Tom or Mary. Nice folks, but must have been driven out by all the recent trouble," he says a little sadly. Seeing Reinert in the inn, Beamer assumes his best business man face and walks toward him saying, "Hello, Reinert! What are you drinking? Have another on me, " he continues with a little wave toward the waitress. He takes a seat by Reinert and says more softly, though still in a conversational tone, "This trouble with orcs has people needing weapons, no doubt, so I bet you've got more orders than you can shake a stick at."

Reinert gives Beamer an opaque glance and continues eating. Soon he accepts the drink and takes a long swig of his beer. Then he turns back to the halfling.

"Oh yes. I remember you. Gave you a ride a while back. Then you fought off some wolves at this very establishment. Lightwave is your name, ain't it. Yea. Busy times. Business has been pretty good. Shame about that orc invasion up north. You involved in that?"

The humans are drinking and engage Rasereit good -naturedly. He beats them all at arm wresting with ease. Two are soldiers of Rivensblight, and two are wood cutters. Ogrin detects no foul play going on.

Eusebius is content to allow Beamer to make the running with Reinert. He sits quietly, nursing an ale. Those who are paying attention will note that, in contrast to his usual behaviour, he doesn't seem to be actually drinking very much of it.

Not at all put off by Reinert's lack of memory, Beamer quickly says, "I'm Beamer, actually. We came down from up north, though involved is going a bit far. If you want to hear about orcs, talk to Rasereit there. He's been on some amazing adventures and slain orcs of all kinds. How's your old friend Trimble? Has he made it out of this all ok?"

"Orcs." Reinert turns and spits onto the straw-covered floor. "Don't need to hear any more 'bout them, less it's about how they were killed."

"As for Trimble. He's fine. I'm headed to his place with a load of supplies in the morning. Did you know Trimble, then?" asks Reinert.
