Trimble says the 'upside down' hallway is as normal as it gets in there. He waves good bye and watches the group as they walk carefully down the passage. Just as they get to the end, and see the room beyond, the door behind them slides quietly shut, and the party sees the last of Trimble for some time.

The party moves slowly into the large room, gasping at the scene before them. They have entered what appears to be a life-sized chess set. In front of them the room stretches some 150 feet, and is nearly as wide. An board fills the entire room except for a 'end zone' of sorts where the group now stands. On the opposite side of the room is a wide opening, but behind it is only darkness.

The 'board' consists of 15 foot squares, alternating shiny black and clean white, eight squares in either direction, just like a normal chess set. The set is filled with pieces.

Directly in front of the group are the white pieces. Ornately carved, they consist of two rooks, two knights, two bishops, a queen and a king. The rooks appear to Unicorn statues, large beasts like heavy warhorses, with braided mains and tails, and wearing leather barding. The Knights are Centaurs, armored and with lances. The bishops are men, or perhaps elves, tall and slender with graceful bows and rapiers. The King and queen appear as noble humans, nearly 7 feet tall, adorned with rich clothes and weapons, all exquisitely carved of some pure white rock.

In front of them are eight 'pawns', carved as viking warriors, with long spears and heavy shields.

Across the field are the black pieces, which are harder to make out. They are demonic creatures, largely. Skelletal pawns, kings and bishops under dark bulky cloaks, minotaur knights, and scorpion rooks.

The room is lit subtly with no light source in evidence. The ceiling can only be guessed at, as only darkness can be seen when looking up. From this darkness a soft female voice says "Chess is Jareth's favorite game."

We must assume the game of chess exists in LEW, since the black king is Jareth's symbol. Assume your players chess knowledge equals your own, unless you have some reason to deem it different.

"Hmm. So we're supposed to play? Anyone an expert? I've played a few times and I know the rules, but I'm certianly no specialist." Knowing the best way to guarantee victory is to not play fair, Beamer immediately begins trying to think of a way to cheat in order to assure victory.

The voice speaks again soft and velvety. "Play, and win, and Jareth will speed you to your destination."

At that the white King, Queen and one bishop, knight and rook animate. They turn, slowly and gracefully, and kneel, facing the adventurers. The unicorn and centaur cross their front legs to lower their body. Each puts out a hand or hoof.

The woman's voice speaks again. "Each of you take the place of a white piece. There is a difference from the board game. To win a piece from the black, you must defeat that piece in battle. Your king will command your troops. Play well, oh guests of Jareth. While victory will take you swiftly towards your goal, defeat could mean death."

All the pieces are in their starting position, as though awaiting a game to begin.

Rasereit grins hugely when he hears "...you must defeat that piece in battle." "Nah this is 'ow ye play chess!" He looks at the others, sizing them up. "Ah've played more'n one game o' chess in taverns, but Ah wouldn't say Ah'm a master. Hmm... Queen's a valuable piece. Use 'er right, an' she'll win the game for ye. On the other 'and, ye could do well to put a tough chap in the King's spot; 'case aught goes amiss, 'e kin defend 'imself. No need to put the brains o' the operation in the King's spot, we kin shout easily enough, eh?"

He turns to face the ceiling. "Oi, disembodied thinger, what's the rules on movin'? We got t'stay in our own squares, or kin we move to heal each other between turns?"

Rasereit shrugs. "Guess we'll find out soon enough. So what d'ye think? Ah kin take a punch an' dish 'em out too, so Ah'll take a point position. For me own style, that means the queen, what about ye all?"

Glad for his friends concern, Beamer nods. "Sounds fine to me, though it does mean their attacks will be directed against me. If one of our tough fighters were the king, our opponent may find attacks that would work in a normal chess game to be worthless. It does appear, though, that we are only being offerred the place of powerful pieces. I would not want to handicap us by having to play a powerful one. I'm not much of a duelist. I wonder if we're allowed to help each other. My spells can reach anywhere on the board. If one of you gets into trouble, I'll try lending a hand."

OOC:
It probably is best to have Beamer as the king rather than a good offensive piece. If it begins to look like he will be attacked, he will use Alter Self to change form to a Lizardman a couple of rounds before the attack could take place.

Here's a map to help your visualize. Looks like Beamer will be White King & Razh will be white Queen. (Ogrin may have to tease him about that) This leaves a bishop, knight & rook for the others. You'll have a little time to experiment with the rules before you get started playing.

EDIT: oh - I realize I neglected to describe the white bishop. It is an elven cleric archer.
