My "Must Have" monsters include:
orc
kobold
aboleth
beholder
goblin
dragons (duh)
skeleton
zombie
vermin (gotta have my spiders, etc.)
carrion crawler
giants
the player races (elf, dwarf, human, halfling, gnome, half-elf, half-orc)
displacer beast

There's a lot of others that I would miss, but I could live without them. These are just the absolute must-haves for a MM.

Most of them. :heh:

Seriously, though, as long as they continue to make appearances in follow-up monster manuals, I'm cool with many not being in the first one.

If they're gonna follow the same methods as 3E, where generally only the core MM monsters will see much use in adventures, Dungeon, etc., then I'd want to see, at the very least:

  • Angels
  • Archons
  • Eladrins
  • Guardinals
  • Modrons
  • Rilmani
  • Slaadi
  • Devils
  • Demons
  • Yugoloths
  • Demodands
  • All chromatic and metallic dragons
  • Githyanki
  • Githzerai
  • Elementals
  • Paraelementals
  • Genies
  • Illithids
  • Beholders
  • Yuan-ti
  • A good mix of golems
  • A good mix of giants
  • Templates for undead

I'd like to see added:
  • Ethergaunts
  • Nerra
  • Shadar-kai
  • Maugs

I absolutely, positively don't want to see:
  • Humanoids with class levels (other than the single base warrior)
  • Spawn of Tiamat
  • "New" creatures that fill the exact same niche previous creatures filled better

That'd be a pretty monster good list for a Rules Cycolpedia sort of product.

What monsters would you be upset over if they weren't present in the 4E Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual?

Enemy Humanoids (Orcs, goblins, kobolds, etc)
Elementals.
Angels/Demons.
Dragons.
Giants (incl ogres, trolls, etc).
Undead (ghosts, skeletons, zombies, vampires).
Lycanthropes.
Animals (incl vermin such as spiders, etc).

... I think that covers the basics.

Are you talking about the lilitu and pleasure devil?
Why not just have a Temptress Fiend and note that the LE ones are called erinyes and have feathered wings, the CE ones are called succubi and have bat wings, and that there are advanced versions with different names?

I think we've got more than a few redundant monsters in the MM1 currently, alas.
