Sacred cow monsters

Why not just have a Temptress Fiend and note that the LE ones are called erinyes and have feathered wings, the CE ones are called succubi and have bat wings, and that there are advanced versions with different names?

I think we've got more than a few redundant monsters in the MM1 currently, alas.

Well, tanar'ri and baatezu qualities aside, I wouldn't want them merged into one single "temptress fiend". But I do see your point that having both in the same book is overkill. I'd rather see the succubi remain in the MM (since it seems to have better "traction") and save the erinyes for a follow-up. The saved space could be used for a yugoloth. :)

Though I'm not sure which ones could be excised without pissing a large group of people off. :heh:

The Erinyes isn't even much of a temptress fiend anymore anyways. Aside from being female, they aren't very similar anymore.

True that. Having elves, dwarves, halflings, and gnomes in both the PHB and the Monster Manual definitely feels redundant. I wonder how many times anyone has actually used the MM entries of the PHB races (other than for the subrace's differences). That's space that could definitely be better used elsewhere.

Good point. I think people get hung up on the "fiendish chick with wings" similarity.

Nor were they classically, either. Old-school erinyes were punishers, not tempters.

Never understood the idea that they were carbon-copy succubi, personally.

Why are these things always humans with fiendish features? I think it would be more fun for a female dwarf with wings to be the supreme temptress!

To a dwarf, a succubus would probably appear just so. Or to a kobold, a really sexy kobold.

Change Shape means never having to say 'you're not my type' :p

Probably because in 2e they were tempters more than punishers.

Because that's how they were in 1e and that's how they always shall be! :D

What monsters would you be upset over if they weren't present in the 4E Dungeons & Dragons Monster Manual?

men. plain and simple. if it ain't got the nastiest monster known in the real world than i ain't playing it.

Ah, but they have a base form of a human woman (or man, now that I think of it...they are not always female).

It would be cool to reimagine them as having a base form that is either horrifyingly bizarre or totally neutral, but everyone viewing them sees them as their sexual ideal. So someone may see the succubus as the standard hot vixen chick, but I'd look at the same creature at the same time and see it as Jaston Statham.
