Saddest Song Ever

I'm not sure about the despair part, but some of the most emotional and beautiful music I've ever heard was by Enya especially May it Be on the LotR:FotR sound track.
You might also try Annie Lennox with her breath taking Into the West off the LotR:RotK sound track. Actually, you might as well look at all the LotR tracks. I find the music when Gandalf falls
in Moria particuarly heart-wrenching. Trust me, if your players are'nt cold-hearted assasins you could invoke just about any emotion you want from them with LotR soundtracks.

I like to have music during my games--especially when there actually IS music being played in the game (at taverns, street performances, temples, etc).

I want to include a Night Twist in my next session, and it produces a song sad enough to induce crushing despair.

Any ideas on the saddest, most haunting, melancholy song ever?

R

In no particular order:

Something I Can Never Have- Nine Inch Nails
I Died For You- Iced Earth
Jeanny- Falco (Yes, Falco)

No matter how much time you spent with your dad, once he is gone, this becomes the most depressing song:

Cats In The Cradle (Harry Chapin)

Thanks,
Rich

Especially if you chase it with Mike & The Mechanics' The Living Years

Oh yeah. I agree.

There's a slit your wrists song right there.
Whoa.

SuStel, Who'd you hear perform this by the way?

I'm not sure. I heard it on the radio once years ago, and somehow managed to tape it. I don't know if I still have the tape, but you can certainly find some version of it on the Internet. If you do a Google search and include mp3, you'll find one that I think is the one I originally heard.

Additional: Aha! That's the one, sung by Jim Brannigan.

Surely one of the famous requiems has to be here somewhere. What about Brahms's German Requiem? Of folk songs, I'd nominate "Tom Dooley," which was "covered" by the Kingston Trio. Based on a real life murder, see here.

From War of the Worlds "Forever Autumn"

Man, I love that song. Man...

Anyway, my vote for saddest song is "Solitude" by Black Sabbath. Nothing happy at all in that one.

Or Solitude Aeturnus' entire first album "Into the Depths of Sorrow". One of my faves.

If we're going into rock and even metal territory, then I'll trump the lot (in my opinion)
"The Coffin Ships" by Primordial

Heck, anything off "A Journey's End" by them would probably qualify too.

well, late to the party, but a pro when it comes to depressing music:

try anything by "fields of the nephilim" ("last exit for the lost " comes to mind)

or, if it is a wilderness encounter try the cure "a Forest" (creepy...)

Hazard by Richard Marx is hardly a barrel of laughs either.

Seems there are hours of music to slit your wrist to out there. What a cheering thought.
