Thunderfoot makes some great points re the music fitting the setting. Like your thinking there mr T.

Still from page 1 of this thread I've had this in my head and so my contribution (if only to get it out of my head):

(Love in a) space dye vest : by Dream Theater, album:Awake

Has a haunting melody and the vocals only enhance this with their seemingly random wanderings.

J.S. Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for Unaccompanied Violin (BWV 1001 - 1006) are perfect for sad music. It's like one long twisting cry of existential agony, and with no lyrics to get in the way.

Well, I'm late and it probably isn't what you were looking for anyway, but having just passed the Christmas season I figure I should mention The Cat Carol by Meryn Cadell (it's a cover of a folk song).

It's a nice little kick in the gut - and yes, a Christmas song to boot...

We get calls about it every year at the radio station. Check out the comments about it on Amazon.
Wow, I thought that I was the only sap who got kicked in the gut by that song...
