Sage Ruling: HP changes with Polymorph!!!

so... IF this becomes 'errata' somehow, then what of the errata that already exists that says you retain your hp in spite of the con change?

Heh. My favourite answer to that so far is from a thread on the WotC boards.

Someone pointed out that the errata was to the DMG entry for Polymorph, and that since the PHB entry is the primary source for the Polymorph spell, that a change to the DMG entry is irrelevant, since the PHB entry supercedes it anyway.

:D

(Of course, since the PHB text doesn't state "Your hit points do change", there's no actual contradiction, and so the primary source rule doesn't come into play anyway, but I found the argument amusing :) )

In the end, it comes down to this ...

WotC doesn't agree with itself on how polymorph works. The ultimate authority, the PHB, is unclear as there are two perfectly logical, yet conflicitng, ways to read the rules with regards to hps and polymorph. What authority comes next (sage articles, sage advice, DMG errata, etc ...) is unclear. In the end, nothing clear of a set of PHB errata specifying whather hps will change will end this argument decisively.

Either interpretation opens up a lot of problems in a game. You are best served by selecting which set of problems you wish to endure and using the rule associated with that set of problems.

I wrote my own versions of polymorph for my game. My version is more complex, but it doesn't have any of the balance or playability issues present in the two interpretations of the PHB polymorph. If you use polymorphing magics a lot, I suggest you look into doing the same thing.

On the Celestial Template, dont have my books with me, but I believe it was the Book of Exalted Deeds which allowed Wildshape adding the Celestial.

Ahh... Exalted Wild Shape. first printing: OCT. '03

Expands wild shape to include: blink dog, giant eagle, giant owl, pegasus, unicorn, and any celestial version of any animal you could normally transform into. (At DM's discretion, other magical beast forms might be available to you. In general, only creatures of CR3 or lower are possible.) You gain the EX & SU abilities of the creature. This ability counts as a use of your wild shape ability & functions the same way.

DM's call, I guess. But if he's letting you have the feat, then you get the template. YMMV
