Sahak of Nine Colors is known to be one of the cruelest archmages found outside the Lower Planes. His desire to dominate his immediate sorroundings led him to develop Sahak's Painful Domination, a spell he normally casts on all his servants and minions. The spell is fueled by necromantic powers and is meant to create utter obedience and loyalty.
Since the casting time of the spell is somewhat long, it is rarely used in combat. It happens occasionaly that Sahak cast's it on a prisoner, as a method of torture.
The spell creates a complex store of negative energy in the person. This spell is able of reading the mind of the target, though with limitations. The spell can only read those thoughts that concern it's caster. Due to the unique nature of the spell pattern, it can only operate while the caster is nearby, otherwise the spell will not work and remain dormant.
If the caster of Sahak's Painful Domination gives an order or command to those he has affected by the spell, they must fulfill his orders and commands to the best of their ability. If any person within range of the caster does something he himself knows is against the wishes of his master, he instantly takes 1d4 points of subdual damage and 1 point of fire damage. If the person doesn't truly know that his actions or his words are against the wishes of the caster, he doesn't suffer this damage. So, if Sahak found a barbarian servant and placed Sahak's Painful Domination on her, she wouldn't suffer any pain if she, for example, spoke to him without being spoken to. She wouldn't know it to be against his wishes and therefore wouldn't take the damage. Yet, a normal servant that spoke to Sahak would take the damage, as he knows that he is not supposed to do so.
The damage manifests as whiplashes, causing tiny cuts to appear on the affected person's body. There are no visible "whips", but those that have been under the effect of the spell describe that pain to be similar to that of a burning whip.
The spell has a number of charges, equal to the casters level x 2. Every time it causes damage to the person it affects, it looses a charge. So, it is possible to end the spell by going against the wishes of the caster many times enough, even though it is not the preferable way. The caster will know if one of his Sahak's Painful Domination spells have been spent or dispelled, thus allowing him to recast it at the first, available time.
The spell offers a Fortitude saving throw when it is cast. If the affected person succeeds in his saving throw, the spell has no effect on him. The caster will though know that his spell didn't have any effect and can attempt to recast it if he has another memorised.
Once the spell is in effect, there are four ways to end it.
1. The affected person can go against the wishes of the caster so many times that the spell's charges are used up.
2: The affected person can remove the Material Focus of the spell, the silver headband. Yet, removing the silver headband causes all charges left in the spell to take effect on the person, causing 1d4 x number of charges points of subdual damage plus fire damage equal to the number of charges.
3: The magic can be removed by spells. Dispel Magic doesn't work against Sahak's Painful Domination, but Remove Curse, Greater Restoration and Limited Wish can remove it.
4: The affected person can allow the duration to expire.
The spell doesn't prevent the affected person from running away though. Yet, as long as the silver headband is still located on the persons head, the caster of Sahak's Painful Domination will automatically succeed in any Scrying attempts on the affected person.
Material Focus: A silver headband, worth 25 gp. which is placed on the head of the affected person.
