Samurai Champloo--any good?

Champloo is also used in japan to describe hip hop music from what I have been told. So think of the series as Samurai Hip Hop. Its made by the same people as did Cowboy Bebop.

Cowboy Bebop
Samurai HipHop

Get it?

I wonder what the next [Genre of Movie][Genre of Music] series will be?
It will probably be set in the modern day and called Pirate Reggae.

How about this? :)

May 3, 2005 -- Acclaimed actor and producer Samuel L. Jackson is set to voice and produce the highly anticipated animated action-adventure AFRO SAMURAI for Spike TV, with Japanese anime studio Gonzo and Japan's largest TV network, Fuji Television. The five episode series will premiere on Spike TV in 2006.

AFRO SAMURAI is the tale of a black samurai in futuristic, yet feudal Japan who is on a mission to avenge the wrongful death of his father. Samuel L. Jackson stars as "Afro," a warrior who travels a solitary path encountering a myriad of enemies, friends and challenges beyond imagination. The series, produced in Japanese animation, blends samurai style with hip-hop, creating a kind of action that American audiences have never seen before.

"With Samuel L. Jackson involved with this project combined with the talents of Gonzo, the leader in producing cutting-edge Japanese animation, and featuring a funky, hip-hop soundtrack -- this project was irresistible for us," says Kevin Kay, Executive Vice President of Development and Production for Spike TV. "Afro Samurai is already generating a great buzz for its animation and captivating storyline."

AFRO SAMURAI is a creative collaboration between Samuel L. Jackson, Takashi Okazaki and Japanese animation company Gonzo, a division of GDH, who is also acting as Series Producer. The concept of AFRO SAMURAI was created by graphic designer, illustrator and artist Takashi "Bob" Okazaki who has worked on the illustration versions of "Spiderman" for Sony and "Blade: Trinity" for New Line Cinema.

On an "anime samurai" note, has anyone seen Peacemaker? I've seen some clips of it and it looks pretty good.

Peacemaker is decent.

I will say I saw on Toonzone.net, one of the producers of the show came on to say this isn't deriviative of SC in any way, merely a fact some people had similiar ideas. Mostly the fact Afro Samurai was deep in development along with the fact it was intended as a US release which drew out the process even more.

I am looking forward to see Afro Samurai. I'm just griping at the fact SPIKE has it. :p

Course they are also co-producing a Blade animation series so I guess they need to hype up the "blackness" of it.

In any case my original point on Mecha ISN'T the fact Mecha is not a movie genre. The point I was trying to make is that both CB and SC draw a lot from Anime genres than they do movies. (At least that's the way I see it.)

Remember when Spike tried to do their own animated series? They had Stripperella, Gary The Rat, and Ren & Stimpy. Stripperella was pretty good, but Gary The Rat was surprisingly cheap (limited, Aqua Teen Hunger Force animation) considering Kelsey Grammer was a producer.

And then there was Ren & Stimpy's Adult Cartoon Party. They only made a handful of episodes, and, of those, only 2 actually aired. I'm guessing the series was a bit too extreme for Spike. Let's face it, they pushed the envelope when they were on Nickelodeon, let alone on an "adult" channel. In the first Spike episode, the characters
were eating vomit and snot.

I saw some caps of later episodes and they certainly pushed the adult angle. More gross stuff and even nudity.

Animated? I heard they were going for live-action. I'm hoping it's animated because a live-action one wouldn't seem right without Snipes.

Animated. Can't find the link...but I believe either Sci-fi.com mentioned it...or it was mentioned on Toonzone.

*refuses to comment on the travesty of Spike PRETENDING to be a purveyor of good adult animation. Mostly because they tried and failed to be Adult Swim...when Adult Swim can and does cater to ACTUAL adult tastes.*

My friend Hamid, who did the ads for Samurai Champloo on Cartoon Network, encourages you heartily to watch the show. And he wants you to know that Spike is butchering Afro Samurai, since they wasted all their budget hiring Samuel L. as a voice actor.

Sweet. :) Tell Hamid he'd better show an ad that uses Ep 15 intro. He'll understand what I mean...

Eh I hope not. Otherwise Spike deserves to be shot in the head with a mini-gun.

Btw I was in error about the Blade TV show. It is "live-action". But rumors persist that because of problems with Goyer and New Line, Snipes won't be reprising the role.
