Sanctuary (No Hunchbacks)

Playing a cloistered cleric/wizard character is making me look long and hard at every possible angle that my spells can give me, since I have nothing else but Knowledge skills going for me.

Which leads me to the spell Sanctuary. It lasts 1rnd/level.

Why on earth would a 1st level cleric ever cast this spell? Granted in some obscure combat situations (running past a door where 5 skeletons have prepared to shoot you) it could be handy but ultimately it seems like its a darn short duration.

It's much better at high levels(via Heighten Spell) for a summoner/healer type. Summoning monsters doesn't break the sanctuary, and you can freely walk up to players in combat to heal them, especially if the enemies they're fighting have low Will saves.

EDIT: Also, it's just mean with a 4,000gp Rod of Lesser Extend.

It's pretty easy to cross a battlefield with a duration like that and get to that downed ally/back rank of enemy spellcasters.

It's not so much a "I can waltz around untouchable, la la la" spell, as it is a "I can get to where I need to be now and you're not going to stop me" spell.

But you can only move 30' (20' if tanked out) before the spell runs out. It wouldn't get you TO the front lines unmolested.

Depends on where you cast it from. At 1st level you just wait to cast it until the last moment, essentially. Get on to just behind the front lines then cast Sanctuary and beeline it straight for where you need to be.

Then again, if you're a 1st level character, chances are you're not going to be doing much rushing behind enemy lines to take out that enemy spellcaster who's pounding down the punishment anyway, heh.

Basically the more limited your options, the more careful you have to be in their deployment. That's just one of those universal truths.
